Adam Sandler described an unexpected moment when he was introduced to a director and his script through Tom Cruise during the filming of a movie. This encounter occurred at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in California on February 5, offering insight into a rare Tom Cruise movie introduction.
The Unexpected Phone Call That Changed Everything
While working on the 2000 comedy Little Nicky, Adam Sandler received a surprising phone call that would pivot his career direction. Sandler, who had a limited acquaintance with Tom Cruise, was informed by a friend that Cruise was on the line for him. During the call, Cruise mentioned that he was with a friend, a director, who had written a movie specifically for Sandler.
“I don’t remember a hundred percent, but I was shooting [2000’s] Little Nicky … I was on the set,”
Sandler recalled.
“I got a phone call. I knew Tom Cruise a little bit. I get a phone call. My friend who’s here tonight, Jonathan, I think comes up to me and says, ‘Tom Cruise is on the phone for you.’ I go, ‘Oh, okay.’ And I go, ‘Hello?’ And [Cruise] goes, ‘Adam, I’m with my friend right now. He’s a really wonderful director.’”
Tom Cruise then explained that the director had written a movie for Sandler and wanted to talk about it immediately, despite Sandler’s current filming commitments. Sandler initially hesitated but agreed to listen since Cruise assured the conversation would be brief. Shortly after, the director named Paul took over the call to express his admiration for Sandler’s work and his hope that Sandler would consider reading the script he had created.
“[Cruise] goes, ‘He wrote a movie for you. He wants to talk to you.’ I go, ‘Okay … now?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘I’m shooting a movie right now.’ He goes, ‘He’ll be quick.’ So I go, ‘Okay.’ And then he gets on the phone, and then it’s Paul and he goes, ‘Hi. I just want to tell you I really like your movies.’ I said, ‘Oh man, that’s cool. Thank you.’ And he goes, ‘And I wrote you a movie. I think it’s really good. Would you mind if I brought it over to you so you could read it?’”
Sandler recounted.
“And I said, ‘Yeah, man, anytime.’ And that was that.”
Discovering the Director and His Work
After the call, Sandler sought to learn more about the director, Anderson, whose name he initially did not recognize. He remembered watching Anderson’s acclaimed 1999 film Mangolia and being deeply impressed. Sandler vividly recalled sitting alone in the front row, captivated by the movie, and feeling a strong urge to collaborate with the filmmaker.

“I was in the front row eating popcorn alone and I remember going, ‘This guy wants to use me, man?’ I got really excited, called him up. I said, ‘Where’s that f—ing script? Bring it over!’”
Sandler said.
Significance of the Encounter and Future Impact
This chance introduction arranged by Tom Cruise proved pivotal for Adam Sandler, linking him to a director whose work he admired and eventually shaping his future projects. The connection underscored Cruise’s role not only as an actor but also as a connector within the film industry, influencing collaborations behind the scenes.
The story highlights how unexpected interactions can open doors, even amid busy filming schedules, and points to the importance of recognizing opportunities when they arise. For Sandler, it marked a meaningful stage in his career and a reminder of the influence of peer endorsements in Hollywood.
