Mark Ruffalo Calls His Hulk Role the “Most Humiliating” Ever

Mark Ruffalo, widely recognized for his portrayal of the Hulk in the Avengers franchise, described his time in the role as one of the most uncomfortable experiences of his career. Speaking to NPR, he shared that the costume and process transformed him in ways that were both taxing and embarrassing. Despite the character’s popularity and visibility, Ruffalo admitted that the role involved extensive hours of makeup, prosthetics, and motion capture work that made him dislike the experience.

The Challenges of Becoming the Hulk On Screen

During the filming of multiple Avengers movies from 2012 to 2019, as well as an appearance in the Disney+ series She Hulk: Attorney at Law in 2022, Ruffalo faced the unique difficulties of embodying a CGI character. He explained,

“It’s the man-canceling suit…it makes you look big everywhere you want to look small and small everywhere you want to look big, you know? It’s just like – it’s the most humiliating thing in the world.”

The actor further detailed his struggles with modesty in the costume, noting,

“(I) had a little loincloth made for it at one point as the years went on, because it’s just so not modest… You know, as an actor, you learn to love a costume. You learn to hide behind props.”

Ruffalo also described the isolating nature of acting against green screens, saying,

“But when you’re in green screen and it’s just you and you’re naked, and it’s all your imagination, you have to put things there that aren’t there. You have to play off people that aren’t there. You have to use props that aren’t there.”

This process requires a level of creativity and endurance that is unique from traditional acting environments.

Ruffalo’s Diverse Career Beyond the Hulk

Mark Ruffalo’s reputation extends far beyond his role as the Hulk, with a career spanning diverse roles across film and television. Recent viewers may have seen him in the acclaimed FBI thriller Task, where he plays a troubled, alcoholic agent investigating gangsters. This role earned Ruffalo several award nominations, including a Golden Globe nod, reflecting his enduring talent.

His filmography includes notable performances such as San Francisco PD homicide Detective Dave Toschi in David Fincher’s 2007 thriller Zodiac, alongside actors like Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal. Although the movie did not achieve significant box office success, Ruffalo’s performance was widely praised. His breakthrough recognition began in 2010 with an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in the indie drama The Kids Are All Right.

Over the last decade, Ruffalo has received three more Oscar nominations for his roles in Foxcatcher, Spotlight, and Yorgos Lanthimos’ fantasy Poor Things, where he starred opposite Emma Stone in 2023. These performances highlight the breadth of his talent well beyond his Marvel character.

Future Appearances as the Hulk

Looking ahead, Ruffalo is scheduled to reprise his Hulk role in the upcoming Spider-Man movie Brand New Day later this year. However, his involvement in the next Avengers project, Doomsday, appears uncertain. Reports currently suggest he will not appear in the film but may return for a subsequent installment, Secret Wars, expected in 2027. This uncertainty adds to the mixed feelings Ruffalo seems to carry about his time as the Hulk.
