Writer-producer Celeste Hughey has chosen Keke Palmer as the versatile lead for her new re-imagining of the series The ‘Burbs, which premieres Sunday on Peacock. Hughey believes Palmer’s ability to navigate both comedy and drama makes her the perfect fit to bring fresh life to the story.
Inspired loosely by the 1989 film starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher, the series follows Samira (played by Palmer) and her husband Rob (Jack Whitehall) as they start a new chapter moving into a suburban neighborhood with their newborn son. The show explores the quirks and mysteries that come with settling into a new community.
A Vision Tailored for Keke Palmer’s Unique Talents
Hughey crafted the script with Palmer’s voice and range in mind, demonstrating her admiration for the actress from the project’s inception.
“Keke was always who I dreamed of playing the lead. She was, from the get-go, exactly who I wanted. So, I wrote to her, basically. With the script, I always had her voice in mind,”
Hughey said during a Zoom interview.
Reflecting on the experience, Hughey admitted,
“There were days on set where I couldn’t even look at her because I couldn’t believe she was there.”
This series marks Palmer’s first time as the top-billed lead since her role in the television series True Jackson, VP, which aired from 2008 to 2011. Hughey praised Palmer’s full spectrum of skills, acknowledging both her comedic talent and her dramatic depth:
“She has the comedy chops. She can do the dramatic. She has the full range. She is, as we know, just a superstar in everything she does. She sang ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ perfectly the other day at a game.”
Hughey compared Palmer’s charisma to that of a modern-day Tom Hanks, emphasizing her blend of charm and versatility:

“And, so, I truly saw her as kind of the modern Tom Hanks. She can do it all and has that charisma and charm that we all love.”
Reimagining a Classic with Contemporary Themes and Characters
While Hughey is a fan of the original 1989 film, she wanted to bring the narrative into the current era with a fresh perspective.
“There’s so much I love about the original movie. It came out when I was quite young, so when I first saw it, it was very scary to me,”
she recalled.
Hughey aimed to maintain the original’s tension and humor, blending fear with comedic elements through sharp dialogue and physical comedy:
“So, those fears and thrills were important to maintain. But as I got older and revisited it again, got to see the amazing commentary and, also, just the hilarious characters and all the elements that they brought together through slapstick and just quips and zingers. So, it was really important to me to make sure that whole essence of the movie was in the show.”
The updated storyline centers on Rob’s daily city commute, leaving Samira to build connections with their eccentric neighbors in the suburb. These characters, portrayed by Julia Duffy, Mark Proksch, and Paula Pell, are drawn together by their fascination with a derelict mansion rumored to have a chilling past involving a young woman’s mysterious disappearance two decades ago.
An Ensemble Cast That Brings Humor and Heart to the Neighborhood
Hughey highlighted the talent and enthusiasm of the supporting cast, noting their excitement to explore both comedic and emotional dimensions of their roles:
“We brought in all these really incredible comedic actors that people love but haven’t gotten to see do the full range of comedy and emotion. So, I think everyone was really excited to be able to step into these roles.”
She described the cast’s chemistry as close-knit and warm, which shines through on screen.
“The cast really came together. They’re all friends. It’s a big love fest between the group. I think you see that in the show. You see them having fun. You want to show up and be on the wine night with them and be friends with everybody.”
Blending Darkness and Humor: Hughey’s Signature Storytelling Style
After her work on genre crossover series like Palm Royale, High Fidelity, and Dead to Me, Hughey embraces tone mixes that combine weighty themes with levity.
“I love to be able to dance along different tonal lines where we can play with darker themes, but still cut it with levity and a joke. That’s the way I approach the world and that’s the way I like to write,”
she explained.
The show’s core themes explore anxiety about new environments, curiosity about unknown neighbors, and the ties that bind communities together. Hughey believes these ideas will resonate with audiences:
“It’s universal. We all have a neighbor that we have spied on.”
She observed how shared experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic enhanced the relatability of such interactions:
“We all live next to people who we don’t choose and we can find found family through them or we can have a little suspicion. Coming out of COVID, we were all stuck at home, looking out the windows, trying to find some entertainment. We’ve all gotten into the world of window watching and have had a lot of fun with that.”
Keke Palmer’s Evolving Career and Impact in Hollywood
Throughout her career, Palmer has demonstrated versatility across various genres and formats. From her early role as Nikki in Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Family Reunion to her music career, which includes singles like “Bottoms Up 2.0” released in 2022, she has consistently showcased her multifaceted talent.
Palmer has appeared at numerous high-profile events, such as the Primetime Emmy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and premieres in Los Angeles and Hollywood. Her roles span from television shows like Scream Queens, where she played Zayday, to voice acting in the Ice Age franchise, reflecting her adaptability and appeal across entertainment mediums.
