Celeste Hughey identified Keke Palmer as the essential talent needed to bring new life to the reboot of The ‘Burbs. Known for her sharp wit and versatile performances, Palmer was the natural choice for this reimagined take on the 1989 Tom Hanks film. The Peacock original honors the original’s setting of Hinkley Hills, as it unfolds around a peculiar circle of neighbors in a familiar cul-de-sac.
Palmer takes on the role of Samira Fisher, a newlywed and mother who has recently relocated to Ashfield Place at her husband Rob’s urging. The show introduces the tension of Samira’s experience as a Black woman navigating a predominantly white suburb, where she encounters microaggressions and racial profiling from the outset.
Addressing Realities of Suburban Life Through a New Lens
Hughey chose to confront these suburban challenges head-on rather than avoiding them in the reboot’s narrative. She emphasized the importance of reflecting Samira’s reality as a Black mother managing postpartum struggles in a largely white neighborhood.
“It’s a Black woman moving into a majority white neighborhood, and she’s a new mother and dealing with some postpartum and so I wanted to make sure that angle felt real,”
Hughey explained.
“But I also always really like to approach heavier themes with levity as well.”
For Palmer, who also serves as an executive producer, the role resonated deeply. As a new mother herself, she found value in portraying postpartum anxieties authentically while highlighting the intricate nuances beneath common neighborhood stereotypes.
“I wanted to make sure that while we point to those cliché or the expected thoughts or archetypes of the people in this town that we really didn’t play the easy way out with it,”
Palmer told TheWrap.
“The balance of playing with those clichés, or the ideas that you may have about a Black woman in town, or Julia [Duffy]’s character, who you might look at as a Karen, or even Paula playing into the clichés of what people assume about a lesbian in the suburbs.

“You think you know these archetypes, but then the whole point of the show is to expand upon that and to humanize these people,”
she added.
The Ensemble Cast and The Mystery at the Heart of The ‘Burbs
The series combines dark comedy with a murder mystery as Samira grows increasingly suspicious of the eerie Victorian house across from her new home. Her husband Rob, portrayed by Jack Whitehall, appears unusually unconcerned by its sinister past, heightening her doubts.
Her investigation is supported by a diverse group of quirky neighbors, including Julia Duffy from Newhart, Paula Pell, known for her work on SNL, and Mark Proksch, recognized for his role in What We Do in the Shadows. Together, they form a ragtag team determined to protect Samira’s family from impending danger.
“It was important for me to create these characters who all had their own secrets, their shames, their unique quirks, their weirdness that they bring to the table,”
Hughey stated.
“They all felt authentic. I think audience members will be able to see themselves in a character, and also want to hang out with these characters.”
