Johnny Cash Was a Surprising Fan of Joaquin Phoenix’s Gladiator

Johnny Cash, the famous American musician, was unexpectedly a fan of the movie Gladiator, a film starring Joaquin Phoenix released in 2000. Although Cash passed away before Phoenix played him in the biopic Walk the Line, he admired Phoenix’s performance as Commodus in the historical epic.

The timeline is revealing: Gladiator premiered in 2000 with Phoenix portraying the ruthless Roman emperor Commodus, who murders the family of the film’s gladiator hero, Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe. Cash died in 2003, and Walk the Line, where Phoenix portrayed Cash himself, came out in 2005. Even though Cash never saw Phoenix’s depiction of him on screen, his son, John Carter Cash, shared that his father was a big fan of Phoenix’s work in Gladiator.

Johnny Cash’s Unexpected Admiration for a Violent Role in Gladiator

In 2014, during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session, John Carter Cash revealed insights into his father’s tastes. When asked about Johnny and June Carter Cash’s favorite films and books, John Carter Cash said,

“He truly loved Russell Crowe in Gladiator. He really did. I met Russell Crowe last night and told him that.”

This demonstrated that Cash held a strong appreciation for the film, even though it was quite distant from his own musical world.

Joaquin Phoenix recalled in an interview with Conan O’Brien that he had the chance to meet Johnny Cash before filming Walk the Line. Phoenix described the meeting:

“Well, I was invited over to dinner at a friend’s house, and went over, and it was an amazing experience. John and June were just beautiful people.”

As the evening concluded, Cash surprised Phoenix with praise for Gladiator, a film unrelated to their meeting’s primary purpose. Phoenix continued,

“And then I had to leave, and John stopped me as I was walking out. He was a big fan of a film I did called ‘Gladiator,’”

and even quoted Cash’s vivid favorite scene:

“He said, ‘My favorite part is when you said, your son squealed like a girl when you nailed him to the cross! And your wife moaned like a wh*re as they ravaged her again and again! I love that part!’”

This unexpected detail reveals the intensity and uncensored nature of Cash’s appreciation for Phoenix’s portrayal in Gladiator.

However, in a separate interview with the British publication IndieLondon, Phoenix shared a different, much gentler memory of Johnny Cash. Far from discussing the violent film, Phoenix observed Cash playing guitar, noting a striking transformation:

“John was actually quite shaky. His hands were shaking and he picked up the guitar. He felt obligated to play and yet he couldn’t play anymore but he was going to try to. The moment he touched the guitar, the shaking stopped. I couldn’t believe it. I had never seen anything like that and he just started strumming a little bit.”

This moment highlighted Cash’s deep and enduring connection to music despite his physical struggles.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Role as Johnny Cash Earned Praise but the Film Feels Familiar

Walk the Line remains a familiar entry in the genre of music biopics, echoing themes and rhythms common across many similar films. Some viewers have even compared it humorously to the parody Walk Hard. Despite this, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance stood out as exceptional, earning him an Academy Award nomination. Reese Witherspoon, who played June Carter Cash, won her only Oscar for her role in the film.

Director James Mangold continued exploring musical legends in film, directing A Complete Unknown in 2024, which starred Timothée Chalamet as a young Bob Dylan and also earned Chalamet an Oscar nod. Meanwhile, Phoenix’s career has spanned diverse characters, including the Joker in 2019’s Joker, a role that won him a much-deserved Oscar, and Napoleon Bonaparte in 2023’s Napoleon, directed by Ridley Scott, who helmed Gladiator.

It remains intriguing that Johnny Cash admired Phoenix’s dark and corrupt depiction of Commodus so intensely, a sharp contrast to the musical icon himself. This connection bridges two very different worlds—historical violence on screen and the deeply emotional life of a country music legend. For fans of either figure, this unexpected crossover highlights the enduring impact both men have had on culture, and how powerful performances like Phoenix’s resonate beyond their immediate stories. Gladiator continues to be available for streaming on Paramount+.
