Nicolas Cage Transforms into Noir Spider-Man in New Series

Sony has unveiled new information and visuals for Spider-Noir, a series that reimagines Spider-Man in a gritty, classic noir style. Starring Nicolas Cage as the lead, the show transports viewers to a Depression-era New York where the Spider-Man story takes on a darker, more cynical tone.

Nicolas Cage Portrays a Noir-Inspired Spider-Man

In Spider-Noir, Nicolas Cage takes on the role of Ben Reilly, a weary private investigator unlike the traditional Peter Parker. This older, world-weary Spider-Man, known simply as The Spider, navigates a shadowy 1930s New York City, trading youthful optimism for a hardened, cynical outlook, complete with a fedora and a tough-guy demeanor. Recent images reveal smoky offices and rain-soaked streets, with Cage fully embodying the archetype of a classic gumshoe.

Producer Phil Miller described the character’s departure from the typical Spider-Man, saying,

“This character’s very different from the Peter Parker from the movies. He’s older and jaded, and not afraid to punch a guy in the face drunkenly.”

Meanwhile, Chris Lord added,

“He already had his Chinatown disillusionment moment that happened years and years ago.”

Dual Visual Styles: Black-and-White and Color

One of the show’s distinctive features is its availability in two different visual formats: a traditional black-and-white version reminiscent of vintage film noir, and a stylized color version that looks like colorized classic movies. Both versions were filmed simultaneously, offering viewers a choice in how they experience the story’s atmosphere.

Nicolas Cage commented on the dual approach, stating,

“The truth is, they both work and they’re beautiful for different reasons. The color is super saturated and gorgeous. I think teenage viewers will appreciate the color, but I also want them to have the option. If they want to experience the concept in black and white, maybe that would instill some interest in them to look at earlier movies and enjoy that as an art form as well.”

Oren Uziel, co-showrunner of the series, explained the creative inspiration behind the visual design:

“It looks like a black and white film that’s been kind of colorized. That was one of the inspirations for how to do it.”

Introducing Femme Fatales and New Interpretations of Known Characters

The visuals also spotlight Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy, a nightclub singer embodying a classic femme fatale role who draws Reilly into the series’ central mystery. Alongside her is a noir-tinged version of Marvel’s Robbie Robertson, portrayed as a more hopeful character compared to Reilly’s cynicism.

Co-showrunner Oren Uziel explained their dynamic:

“They both go back a long way. Their friendship has really deep ties. The biggest and most obvious difference is that Robbie is a guy who almost carries around a rabbit’s foot. He thinks he’s lucky, and it’s all going to work out. Ben is a character who thinks it’s never going to work out. It’s all going to go to shit. Life’s a big disaster. So Ben’s cynicism is kind of an opposing force to Robbie’s optimism.”

The cast leans heavily into classic detective tropes while remaining connected to Spider-Man lore. Karen Rodriguez plays Janet, a new character inspired by Effie from The Maltese Falcon, who is described as dependable and supportive throughout the investigation. Li Jun Li’s Cat Hardy is described as

“a nightclub chanteuse who lures Reilly into the underworld conspiracy at the center of the series.”

The Central Mystery: Crime, Conspiracy, and Supernatural Threats

The storyline revolves around Silvermane, a powerful gang leader who has survived several assassination attempts, sparking a deeper and more dangerous investigation. What begins as a standard detective case quickly escalates when Ben Reilly discovers signs of otherworldly forces at play. These include encounters with an arsonist capable of manipulating fire and violent confrontations with hired enforcers like Flint Marko.

Release and Viewing Options

Spider-Noir is slated to debut this spring on MGM+ in the United States, with an international rollout planned on Prime Video. Fans of noir, Spider-Man, and crime drama can expect a fresh and stylistically rich take on the superhero genre through the lens of classic detective storytelling.
