Christopher Nolan acknowledged that reactions to his 2014 science fiction film, Interstellar, were initially mixed when it premiered in theatres. Reflecting on the Christopher Nolan Interstellar response, Nolan described the early reception as somewhat dismissive despite the film’s notable box office success.
Mixed Critical Reception Despite Commercial Success
<pDuring a recent reunion with actor Timothee Chalamet at an IMAX screening event for Interstellar, Nolan shared that some critics and audience members received the movie in a “slightly ambiguous way,” even though it earned “very good money around the world.” He attributed the lukewarm critical response in part to high expectations following his previous hits like Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy. These earlier successes had set a demanding standard which Interstellar struggled to meet for some viewers.
Nolan’s Reflection on Emotional Themes and Criticism
Nolan recalled being labeled by a producer as
“a cold guy who makes cold films,”
a reputation he was eager to overcome. He explained that what attracted him most to Interstellar’s script was its emphasis on love and family as central themes. Nolan suggested that some critics were unsure how to interpret this wholesome emotional core coming from him, which may have led to a sense of surprise or hesitation in their reviews. Despite these critical challenges, the movie proved to be a commercial hit, grossing nearly $681 million worldwide, which Nolan described as
“an incredible relief and a humbling thing.”
