Ryan Coogler recently shared insights about the profound impact Chadwick Boseman had on his life and work, revealing lessons learned from their collaboration. The director discussed how working with Boseman on Black Panther shaped his perspective on filmmaking and how the actor’s death in 2020 altered his career outlook.
How Boseman’s Presence Affected Coogler During Black Panther
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler opened up about the challenges he faced while making the first Black Panther film. He explained that the pressure of ensuring the movie’s success made him overlook the full magnitude of Boseman’s contributions.
“Engaging with him on an artistic level, conversations that will forever just be between me and him — I was about 30 years old, stressed, completely out of my mind, sleep-deprived, convinced that the movie wasn’t going to work,”
Coogler recalled. Looking back, he admitted,
“I robbed myself of truly enjoying that privilege.”
The Consistent Excellence Chadwick Brought to Set
Coogler praised Boseman’s unwavering professionalism on set, emphasizing the actor’s remarkable consistency.
“Even of sitting there and enjoying the countless Chadwick Boseman takes, because he didn’t have a bad take,”
he said. Boseman’s passing made the director reevaluate how he values moments spent with his cast.
“When he passed, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, how much stuff have I not allowed myself to enjoy because I was in my own head, feeling like I was unworthy,’”
Coogler explained.
A Lasting Legacy Guiding Coogler’s Approach to Filmmaking
Drawing from these experiences, Coogler now approaches his projects with renewed appreciation and a different mindset.
“I’m going to take the lessons from Chad for the rest of my life. I have to see the good in things, see the value in things, and not let impostor syndrome or guilt or negativity rob me of moments with my cast,”
he shared. Boseman’s private battle with cancer and subsequent passing deeply affected the entire Black Panther team, especially when Coogler returned to direct Wakanda Forever while many were still grieving.
This reflection by Ryan Coogler highlights how Chadwick Boseman’s dedication left a lasting mark not only on audiences but on the filmmakers who worked closely with him. Coogler’s renewed focus on valuing every moment with his cast signals how Boseman’s influence continues to shape his creative journey.
