Chris Hemsworth Felt Self-Conscious Acting with Mark Ruffalo in Crime 101

Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, widely known for their roles as Thor and Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are joining forces once again in the crime thriller Crime 101. This film, which premieres this Friday, offers the actors a departure from their superhero personas to explore a gritty story about a jewel thief and the detective pursuing him. The new dynamic marks a notable change for the pair, as Hemsworth admits acting alongside Ruffalo in such different roles brought unique challenges.

Exploring a New Dynamic Beyond the MCU

While Hemsworth and Ruffalo have become familiar for their offbeat camaraderie in Marvel films, Crime 101 places them as opponents rather than friends. Hemsworth portrays Mike, a skilled but troubled jewel thief, while Ruffalo embodies the detective tracking Mike’s every move. Hemsworth reflected on the experience, stating,

“I’ve had so much fun in the Marvel films working with everyone, but that felt incredibly special, that relationship, because we’re doing something very different and unique to the space,”

highlighting how this project opened new grounds for their partnership.

Ruffalo shared his perspective on the unfamiliar territory of this new onscreen relationship:

“When this came along, it was obviously very unfamiliar territory for our dynamic,”

expressing their initial surprise at playing adversaries rather than allies. He also added with a laugh,

“We immediately wanted to go back to Thor and Banner, Banner and Thor,”

showing how natural their usual roles have become.

Feeling Vulnerable and Self-Conscious on Set

Hemsworth revealed that acting with Ruffalo, whom he described as

“one of the kindest people in the world and most talented,”

brought some unexpected self-awareness.

“I personally felt it was like acting in front of a family member, where they know all your tricks, and you feel a lot more self-conscious,”

he said. However, this unease aligned well with his character’s emotional state, as Hemsworth explained,

“But that kind of lent itself to what my character was supposed to be feeling in that moment, so it really helped.”

Ruffalo praised Hemsworth’s performance, saying,

“And I was just looking at him, going, He’s so good, I love him so much, and I’m so excited to see him do this kind of part, and the vulnerability that he had.”

This vulnerability represents a significant departure from Hemsworth’s usual heroic portrayals.

Delving into the Complex Character of Mike

Ruffalo noted that Hemsworth’s character Mike is layered and contrasting:

“Chris is someone who knows what to do when the time is right to do it, and we love him for that. But this character doesn’t know what to do sometimes. At some glance, he’s like the best jewelry thief in the world, [but] when you scratch the surface a little bit more, the guy’s just a mess, you know? And that was exciting to see.”

The role challenged Hemsworth to display a more conflicted and unstable side.

In fact, Ruffalo remarked on how transformed Hemsworth appeared on set, admitting,

“When I did see him on set, I didn’t recognize him, honestly,”

indicating just how far Hemsworth stepped outside of familiar territory for this project.

Upcoming Release and Supporting Cast

Crime 101 also features Halle Berry, Barry Keoghan, and Monica Barbaro, adding to the film’s strong ensemble. The thriller is set to hit theaters this Friday, promising a fresh experience for fans of the two actors and a compelling crime story that contrasts sharply with their Marvel adventures.

With a shift from superhero banter to tense cat-and-mouse suspense, this film provides a glimpse of Hemsworth and Ruffalo’s versatility and willingness to explore challenging roles beyond their established characters in the MCU.
