Intuit TurboTax made its 13th consecutive appearance at the Super Bowl in 2026 with a uniquely humorous and dramatic mockumentary starring Adrien Brody, crafted to deliver an unconventional and memorable ad experience. This approach aimed to highlight the brand’s focus on expert assistance while providing a fresh take on the usual high-energy Super Bowl commercials.
Behind the Scenes: Creating ‘The Expert’ with Adrien Brody and Director Craig Gillespie
Developed by advertising agency R/GA and directed by MJZ’s Craig Gillespie, the advertisement began with a teaser campaign showcasing Adrien Brody as ‘The Expert’ preparing in his trailer. The full 45-second spot aired just before halftime on February 8th, preceded by a 30-second teaser during the pre-game. Together, these segments combine into a two-minute extended cut now available on TurboTax’s digital platforms, in retail stores, and cinema screens nationwide.
Trevor Kelly, Intuit’s Vice President of Marketing for the consumer group, explained the intent behind the ad’s creative direction. While last year’s Super Bowl campaign had introduced TurboTax as an expert-led option, this year’s focus was to clearly emphasize the brand’s unique strength—an
“unparalleled combination of advanced agentic AI and actual human expertise”

Injecting Humor Through Drama: The Mockumentary Concept Inspired by Pop Culture
R/GA’s team found inspiration in cultural trends when designing the campaign’s tone. Recognizing that audiences enjoy dramatic sensationalism in entertainment but prefer simplicity when it comes to finances, the agency chose to use humor to bridge this gap. Trevor Kelly shared,

“When you combined those two ideas… it was magical,”

Ryan O’Keefe, group creative director at R/GA, elaborated on the creative tension behind the campaign, saying,
“That tension became the idea. Instead of inventing drama, we challenged its absence by casting one of the most dramatic actors working today. [Casting] Adrien Brody wasn’t about celebrity, he was proof that if he couldn’t bring drama to TurboTax, then the brand promise holds under any pressure.”

Actors’ Contrast Enhances Humor: Adrien Brody’s Comedic Debut in the Campaign
The ad was tailored specifically for Adrien Brody, whose reputation for intense and serious roles added a layer of humor to the campaign. According to Ryan O’Keefe,
“His reputation for intense, serious roles made the idea of him playing a self-aware version of himself training to play a TurboTax Expert inherently funny. That contrast let us keep the writing deliberately dry, restrained, and un–Super Bowl. Luckily for us, from day one, Adrien was fully in on the joke and we were grateful to be trusted with his first real step into comedy in this way.”

This marked Brody’s first Super Bowl appearance in 15 years. Trevor Kelly said,
“and he is rightfully particular about all of his projects, so it was an honour to work with him,”
Trevor Kelly, VP of Marketing. He also praised the director, noting,
“We were also lucky enough to work with award-winning director Craig Gillespie as well, who had an incredible vision and spirit.”

Director’s Role in Balancing Comedy and Drama
Ryan O’Keefe highlighted Gillespie’s ability to balance Adrien Brody’s dramatic intensity with subtle comedic direction, calling it the perfect counter. He said,
“He knows exactly when to push, when to step back, and when to save everyone from themselves. ‘The Expert’ needed that kind of director; someone who could protect the idea from overthinking while making it all feel effortless.”

The On-Set Dynamic: Improvisation and Collaboration Bring the Spot to Life
Watching the collaboration between Adrien Brody and Craig Gillespie on set was a remarkable experience for the marketing team. Trevor Kelly mentioned,
“He is truly such a gifted actor, and a lot of what you see in the final spot was his improvising. He had a lot of fun with this comedic role and has shared as much in interviews! He is an incredible comedic actor, along with being an incredible dramatic actor, and that has shown in a lot of his recent work, including our Super Bowl spot.”

Longstanding Partnership Enables Creative Freedom at R/GA and TurboTax
TurboTax’s collaboration with R/GA spans several years and is marked by a non-traditional client-agency relationship built on trust and understanding. Ryan O’Keefe explained,
“Year after year, we’ve learnt that the strongest work comes from aligning early around a clear idea and committing to protect it. It’s that trust that allowed us to take a more confident, more restrained swing this year and let the simplicity of the idea do the heavy lifting.”
Ryan O’Keefe, Group Creative Director.
While locking in the concept early can be risky, Ryan said the greater challenge was in holding onto the integrity of the idea throughout production, ensuring the campaign remained sharp until the game day.
Targeting Younger Audiences with a Modern, Stress-Free Tax Filing Message
TurboTax’s ‘Now This Is Taxes’ marketing platform has increasingly focused on engaging Gen Z consumers, notably through a contemporary use of music and relatable messaging. Trevor Kelly pointed out that this strategy extended naturally into the Big Game campaign, noting,
“In recent years, Adrien has caught the attention of younger audiences, particularly following his acclaimed performance in the 2024 film ‘The Brutalist’, which was distributed by A24 Films and for which he won numerous awards,”
Trevor Kelly, VP of Marketing.
He added,
“As many Gen Z look to file their taxes for the first time, or are in the market for live tax support, we are excited to highlight Adrien’s performance and TurboTax experts as the gold standard in a modern, stress-free tax filing experience.”
Trevor Kelly, VP of Marketing.
Further emphasizing the campaign’s message, he said,
“So many consumers still settle for doing their taxes in a very antiquated way, and TurboTax is the antidote to that because we have our unparalleled combination of AI and HI (human intelligence). The digital platform is incredibly easy and then enhanced with human expertise. And we’ve used the largest stage possible to get this message out and create something really fun and memorable.”

Wide Distribution Extends Engagement Beyond the Game
Following the Super Bowl airing, the extended version of the advertisement continues to run across TurboTax’s digital channels, retail locations, and in cinemas, ensuring that viewers can engage with the campaign beyond the game day excitement. This multifaceted rollout helps maintain momentum and reinforces TurboTax’s leadership in blending expert support with innovative technology.
