Keanu Reeves’ Good Fortune Flops, Streaming This Valentine’s Day

Keanu Reeves’ film Good Fortune, an R-rated comedy-fantasy, struggled significantly during its initial release but will be available for streaming on Starz starting February 14, 2026. Despite its poor box office performance, the movie is now positioned for a wider audience through its digital release approximately four months after premiering in theaters.

Box Office Performance and Streaming Launch

Good Fortune officially hit Starz streaming on Valentine’s Day, following its theatrical debut on October 17, 2025, and a video-on-demand (VOD) release on November 7, 2025. Lionsgate chose to transition the film quickly to digital platforms, with VOD availability less than a month after theaters. The film opened at number three domestically but failed to recoup its $30 million production budget, grossing just $26 million worldwide, excluding significant marketing expenses.

The timing of Good Fortune’s VOD release seems aimed at maximizing revenue after the disappointing theater run, as it topped the PVOD charts in its initial week. However, the nearly 100-day wait before making the film available on Starz indicates the studio may have sought to optimize each distribution phase separately.

Creative Team and Plot Overview

Written and directed by Aziz Ansari in his first feature film as director, Good Fortune stars Reeves alongside Ansari, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Sandra Oh. The story centers on Reeves’ character, the angel Gabriel, who faces repercussions after body-swapping two men—played by Ansari and Rogen—in an attempt to teach them that wealth cannot solve all problems.

As unintended chaos unveils, Gabriel loses his wings and strives to fix the turmoil he created. The film is both set and filmed in Los Angeles, blending comedic and fantastical elements to convey its message.

Critical Reception Versus Financial Outcome

While underperforming commercially, Good Fortune fared much better with critics and viewers. Rotten Tomatoes scores reflect a positive reception, with a 78% critics’ rating based on 147 reviews and an 80% audience approval score. This critical recognition highlights a disconnect between box office results and audience or critic appreciation.

Good Fortune represents Keanu Reeves’ first non-franchise lead role since his cameo as himself in the 2019 comedy Always Be My Maybe. Reeves experienced a resurgence after 2014 due to the success of the John Wick franchise, which remains a defining project in his career.

Keanu Reeves’ Upcoming Projects

Outside of Good Fortune, Reeves continues to engage in diverse roles. In addition to ongoing discussions about a fifth John Wick installment, he recently provided his likeness and voice for an upcoming John Wick video game announced during Sony’s State of Play event.

Reeves also has two black comedy films currently in post-production: Outcome, written and directed by Jonah Hill, featuring Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer, and The Entertainment System Is Down by Ruben Östlund, the follow-up to Triangle of Sadness, with a cast including Kirsten Dunst, Samantha Morton, and Nicholas Braun. These projects indicate Reeves’ intent to explore new genres beyond his established action star persona.

The release of Good Fortune on Starz offers audiences the chance to reassess Reeves’ work in a comedic-fantasy setting and may provide a stronger reception through streaming platforms compared to its initial box office showing.
