At 86 years old, the acclaimed actor, famous for roles such as Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Magneto in the X-Men films, served as the event’s guest of honour. The painting, created by Spanish artist Julia de Gabriel and personally signed by McKellen, was auctioned to raise funds for the Peter Tatchell Foundation.

As the bidding opened, Sir Ian energized the crowd by saying,

“Never mind the painting, lovely as it is, who wouldn’t want to have me in their bedroom?”

before emphasizing the importance of the foundation’s work.

“Peter Tatchell’s foundation is one of the most important institutions in this country, if not the world. I’m sure you’d agree. The least we can do is support it.”

Support from Community Leaders

The winning bid came from Suki Sandhu, founder and chief executive of the executive search company Audeliss. Speaking on his decision to buy the painting, Sandhu expressed deep admiration for McKellen’s contributions:

“I adore Ian McKellen. He is one of the true icons of our community. They say we stand on the shoulders of giants.”

Reflecting on his personal connection to the actor’s legacy and the impact of the foundation, Sandhu added,

“I can’t be who I am now today if it wasn’t for the work that he did decades ago and Peter Tatchell also the work that he does for our community, I mean, the bravery, the courage it takes for what he does. How can I not support that?”

He also praised Tatchell’s long-standing activism, saying,

“He’s a real activist. He’s been doing it for decades. He’s one of the original activists, I would say, and he’s just amazing.”
