Ian McKellen has spoken candidly about the effects of his 2024 accident, which became widely known after he suffered injuries during a theatre performance. The incident happened in June 2024 while McKellen was acting in the play Player Kings, portraying Henry IV. During a choreographed fight scene, he lost his footing and fell, resulting in neck and wrist injuries. This injury brought significant physical pain and a difficult mental adjustment for the veteran actor.
Mental Realizations Following the Injury
The 86-year-old star described in a recent interview with The Times how the accident forced him to confront his own mortality. He admitted,
I have accepted that I’m not immortal. Yet I still function. And really the inevitability of mortality comes not just from what you are feeling about yourself, but the simple fact that your friends die – all the time.
McKellen explained that when someone is young, death seems distant and almost bewildering, but as one ages, it becomes an inescapable part of life. He said,
When you are young, death is astonishing, a fascinating thing, but it’s a feature of getting older. Death becomes ever present.
Looking Ahead to New Projects
Despite the challenges he has faced, Ian McKellen affirmed his ongoing commitment to his work, revealing that he still has ambitions to pursue. He pointed out that
he’s still got more to do.
Among his upcoming roles, McKellen is preparing to reprise his famous character Magneto in the new film Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers. The action-packed science fiction movie is scheduled for release on December 18, marking an important return to the big screen for the celebrated actor.
