Daniel Radcliffe Opens Up About Emotional Rollercoaster of Fatherhood

Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that becoming a new father has been an overwhelming yet rewarding experience as he balances his demanding Broadway schedule. The 36-year-old actor spoke candidly during a rehearsal break for his upcoming one-man show, Every Brilliant Thing, which will begin previews on February 21 in Manhattan.

The performance centers on a character who compiles a list of reasons to live, aiming to reach his suicidal mother, with a format that heavily involves direct interaction with the theater audience. Radcliffe highlighted the unique challenges of this setup.

Insights Into the Play’s Demanding Role and Audience Connection

During rehearsals, Radcliffe emphasized his crucial role in the production, saying,

“It’s the third day of rehearsals, I’m literally the only person in this play. They can’t start without me,”

as shared in an interview with Rolling Stone. The actor described the intense dynamic of speaking directly to the audience throughout the show as

“very much outside of my comfort zone.”

Despite the uncertainty involved, he expressed attraction to this unpredictability:

“Not really knowing what’s going to happen, that’s always a very enticing prospect for me.”

Fatherhood Inspires Radcliffe’s Personal Take on the Play’s Theme

The play’s storyline deals with a mother suffering from suicidal depression, supported by her child through an ever-growing list that catalogues the joys of life. When asked what would be on his personal list for Every Brilliant Thing, Radcliffe immediately mentioned his young son, who he shares with his wife, Erin Drake.

He stated,

“Most of mine at the moment would probably be about my son, all the bizarre pronunciations he has for things.”

Radcliffe described memorable moments with his son, including attending a live monster truck event and the amusing way his child refers to confetti and toys.

He recounted,

“I took him to [the live monster-truck show] Monster Jam, and there’s a truck that’s a unicorn, and it shoots confetti out of its horn. The truck is called Sparkle Smash, if you’re interested. I heard him telling that story later, and he referred to the confetti as ‘spaghetti.’ Also, his godfather gave him a little toy-car model of a Lamborghini, which he has remembered as ‘zucchini.’ So there’s any number of just incredibly sweet things that he says.”

Music and Everyday Moments Among Daniel Radcliffe’s List of Joys

Beyond family, Radcliffe also included music and simple pleasures as sources of happiness. He mentioned artists such as Joanna Newsom and Tom Lehrer, saying,

“I could do a list of a thousand brilliant things that were just records. And there’s one in the show that I love, which is ‘Waking up late with someone you love.’ That is a brilliant thing in life.”

Expanding Creative Horizons: Television and Comedy

In addition to his stage work, Radcliffe stars in the NBC sitcom The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, portraying a filmmaker striving to restore the reputation of a disgraced football player, played by Tracy Morgan. This role gives Radcliffe a new comedic experience, contrasting with his natural tendency toward pessimism.

He shared,

“I’m naturally pessimistic about a lot of things, so I never want to lean too much into unbridled optimism, but it would be awesome if this show can go for a few years. It would make me very happy.”

Working with Tracy Morgan: A Blend of Humor and Heart

Radcliffe praised Tracy Morgan’s unique presence on set, noting his unpredictable humor and emotional depth.

“Tracy, he’s one of the funniest people on the planet. Every day, you’re going to hear him say five of the craziest things you’ve ever heard a human being say. And also he’s incredibly generous and capable of having very emotional conversations as well. So he’s a real pleasure to work with. We’re very different, but the thing we overlap on is that we both really, really love our job and feel very lucky to be able to do it,”

he explained.

First-ever Basketball Game and New Experiences Ahead

Looking forward, Radcliffe plans to attend his first basketball game, joining Morgan at Madison Square Garden. He joked about the upcoming outing, saying,

“I’m going to a Knicks game with him. I’ve never been to a basketball game, and I’m also aware that Tracy’s, like, the mayor of MSG. It’s going to be an interesting experience.”

Emotional Complexity and Hope in Radcliffe’s Journey of Fatherhood and Career

Daniel Radcliffe’s reflections reveal a mixture of intense emotions and hopeful anticipation as he navigates new fatherhood alongside a demanding and varied career. His openness about the challenges and delights brought by his son, combined with his dedication to innovative theatrical work and collaborative projects like his NBC sitcom, offer a glimpse into how he embraces both uncertainty and joy. This phase of his life and career promises further growth, with fans eager to see how his roles on stage and screen evolve amid his personal transformation.
