Michael Douglas’ Iconic Wall Street Role Almost Went to These Stars

Michael Douglas’ renowned role as Gordon Gekko in the 1987 film Wall Street nearly went to other actors before he ultimately took the part. During a panel at the TCM Classic Film Festival on February 15, the 81-year-old actor revealed that director Oliver Stone initially approached other stars for the role. The casting of this character, which earned Douglas an Academy Award for Best Actor, almost had a very different outcome.

Douglas explained that Oliver Stone first offered the role to Warren Beatty, who declined. Then, Richard Gere was considered but also turned it down before the role landed with Douglas.

“I must say, we were talking just before and doing a little preparation for this, since I have not seen the movie fully in about 40 years, because I was always just so impressed and knocked out,”

Douglas said.

“But I saw an article recently said that Oliver first went to Warren Beatty, who passed on it, and then to Richard Gere, who passed on it.”

Michael Douglas Reflects on His Casting and Career

Despite not being Stone’s first choice, Douglas expressed that, as an actor, one tends to believe they were selected directly for a role.

“You always like to think you were the one that was chosen,”

he admitted. However, Douglas acknowledged the disappointment of those who passed on the film.

“But saying that, those poor b—–ds,”

he remarked.

“I mean, how do you think they feel? You know, with a picture they turned down.”

His portrayal of the ruthless and cunning Gordon Gekko became iconic, cementing Douglas’ reputation in Hollywood. The character’s mentorship to Charlie Sheen’s Bud Fox became a defining element of the film’s narrative, showing Gekko’s influence on a young stockbroker’s rise in the financial world.

Return to the Role and Its Significance

Douglas reprised his role as Gordon Gekko in the 2010 sequel, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, which depicted Gekko’s return from prison with intentions to reclaim his power within the market. Reflecting on the sequel script, Douglas shared how engaged he was with its serious tone.

“I read the script, and it was, it was serious, serious work. So I was really happy, excited. It was a great part. You don’t get many good parts in your life,”

he said.

“I’ve always tried to pick, having a producing background, I think are good movies, and I’ll take whatever part I can in a movie that’s good. I don’t worry about my part, but this was a great part.”

Personal Reflections and Upcoming Memoir

Beyond his film achievements, Douglas is preparing to release a memoir that spans his extensive Hollywood career and personal battles. He recently shared on Instagram that writing the memoir has stirred vivid memories.

“There’s a lot to tell — before I forget,”

Douglas joked. The book will also touch on his long marriage to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, his fight with stage four cancer, and other struggles.

The couple, who first met at the Deauville Film Festival in France in 1998, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in November 2025. They became engaged in December 1999 and wed the following year. They have two children, Dylan, 25, and Carys, 22. On their anniversary, Zeta-Jones posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, recalling their wedding day:

“25 years ago today, I walked down the aisle,”

she wrote.

“The intoxicating aroma of flowers, the glow of the candles, the resounding harmonious Welsh choir and you at the end of the long walk waiting for me, looking at me the way only you can. I love you today as I did then. Thank you sweetheart♥️”

She also shared a photo from the night they first met, accompanied by the caption,

highlighting the deep connection that has lasted for decades.
