Steven Soderbergh Slams Disney for Killing Hunt for Ben Solo

Director Steven Soderbergh expressed strong disappointment over Disney’s decision to cancel the planned Star Wars movie, The Hunt for Ben Solo, which would have explored the story of Kylo Ren after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Despite spending over two years developing the concept with actor Adam Driver and writer Rebecca Blunt, Soderbergh revealed that Disney ultimately rejected the project, citing disbelief that the character Ben Solo could still be alive.

Project Development and Rejection Explained

The Hunt for Ben Solo aimed to continue Kylo Ren’s narrative beyond the sequel trilogy, focusing on his story despite his apparent death in the 2019 film. Soderbergh shared with BK Mag that the project involved two and a half years of unpaid work from himself, Driver, and Blunt. When he approached Disney for a final decision, he was well-prepared with answers on potential budgeting and production details, but the studio declined without entering negotiations.

Soderbergh recalled the studio’s explanation:

“The stated reason was, ‘We don’t think Ben Solo could be alive.’ And that was all we were told. And so there’s nothing to do about it, except move on.”

He described the experience as frustrating and expressed disbelief over the outcome:

“But it never even got to that point. It’s insane. We’re all very disappointed.”

Insights from Adam Driver and Industry Context

The initial news about The Hunt for Ben Solo surfaced in October when star Adam Driver confirmed to AP News that Disney executives, including CEO Bob Iger and Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman, had rejected the project. Driver quoted their decision clearly:

“We took it to [Disney CEO] Bob Iger and [Disney Entertainment co-chair] Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.”

Despite the cancellation, other Star Wars stories are still in development. Fans can look forward to new projects including a Rey-centered film and a trilogy crafted by Simon Kinberg, known for his work on X-Men: Days of Future Past. These projects continue the post-sequel trilogy era of the franchise, keeping the Star Wars universe expanding even without the Ben Solo sequel.

Ongoing Star Wars Movie Developments and Future Prospects

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has hinted that while The Hunt for Ben Solo remains off the table for now, the possibility of revisiting similar stories has not been entirely ruled out. Meanwhile, actress Daisy Ridley, who portrayed Rey, has acknowledged hearing rumors about the canceled movie, but expressed positivity about fan-driven campaigns supporting new Star Wars films:

“It’s good for us to all be united about something in a really positive way.”

As the franchise moves forward, fans can expect a variety of new narratives from the Star Wars universe. While the loss of The Hunt for Ben Solo is a setback for many, the continued development of both character-focused stories and broader trilogies indicates that Disney remains committed to expanding the saga.
