Film concept artist Phil Saunders recently shared concept art from the movie Tron: Ares, featuring Cillian Murphy in the role of Sark. Despite the detailed illustrations aiming to lure Murphy back into the franchise, the actor ultimately did not sign on for the film. This art highlights an intriguing “what could have been” moment for fans of the series and of Murphy’s previous involvement.
Saunders explained that the early request to depict Murphy as Sark came from Production Designer Darren Gilford. The intent was to attract Murphy to reprise his role as the junior Dillinger, but his absence from the final production leaves the concept unrealized. Saunders also noted the inspiration from legendary artist Moebius, incorporating a variation of his iconic costume design.
Shift in Storyline and New Characters in Tron: Ares
Instead of featuring Edward Dillinger Jr., portrayed by Murphy, as the antagonist battling Jared Leto’s rogue AI Ares, Tron: Ares introduces a fresh generation of characters. The film centers on Dillinger Jr.’s son, Julian, played by Evan Peters, who assumes the CEO position at Dillinger Systems. Julian’s pursuit of Eve Kim—played by Greta Lee—drives much of the plot after she comes into possession of Kevin Flynn’s permanence code.
In response, Julian dispatches combat programs Ares and Athena, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, to retrieve the code. Yet, Ares unexpectedly gains sentience, switching allegiances by defending Eve against Athena and utilizing the permanence code to become human. The movie concludes with Julian being hunted by police for his destructive actions, culminating in his leap into the digital grid. In the grid’s final scene, as Julian secures a disc, a familiar headpiece forms, hinting at his transformation into the iconic villain Sark.

Behind the Scenes: Development and Franchise Future
Originally titled Tron: Ascension, Tron: Ares was announced in 2017 as a soft reboot, which explains the decision to introduce new characters instead of continuing with the previous leads like Garrett Hedlund’s Sam Flynn and Murphy’s Edward Dillinger Jr. The film’s ending is designed to pave the way for a fourth installment, focusing on Peters’ new role as Sark.
However, the movie’s disappointing box office performance and largely negative critical reception have cast uncertainty over the franchise’s future. These challenges have put the continuation of the Tron universe on hold, leaving fans to wonder if and when the story will advance further.

Insight From the Film’s Concept Artist on Murphy’s Possible Return
Phil Saunders shared his reflections on the attempt to bring Cillian Murphy back as Sark, revealing the creative process behind the concept art. He stated,
“One of the first things Production Designer Darren Gilford asked me to tackle on Tron: Legacy [sic] was a quick illustration of Cillian Murphy as the new Sark,”
Saunders wrote on his official ArtStation account.
“I think it was meant to lure him to the production to reprise his role as the junior Dillinger. Given his absence from the movie, I hope this illo isn’t the reason he passed! As Moebius has always been a huge hero of mine (and a kinder, more gracious soul I’ve never met), I was thrilled to do a variation on his iconic costume. As usual, I rough out a few variations and am pleased when my favorite is selected.”
Additionally, a social media post shared the concept art with the comment,
“Concept Art of Ed Dillinger Jr as Sark in Tron Ares!(WE COULD’VE HAD IT ALL!!! 😭),”
underscoring the strong fan disappointment over Murphy’s absence.
