Daniel Radcliffe is widely recognized for his iconic role as Harry Potter, but the actor is deliberately keeping his two-year-old son from associating him with the famous character just yet. Despite the lasting cultural impact of the Harry Potter films, Radcliffe wants to preserve his identity in his son’s eyes simply as his father.
Son Has Yet to Connect Radcliffe to the Famous Role
Radcliffe recently revealed in an interview with The New York Times that his son does not recognize him on the cover of a Harry Potter DVD. He recalled a moment when a signed DVD was left on the kitchen table for several days, and he tested whether his child could identify the image of himself as the wizard.
Does my son know who Harry Potter is? No, not yet,
Radcliffe said.
Somebody gave me a DVD to sign recently, so it was sitting on our kitchen table for a couple of days, and at one point, he was next to it and I was just like, ‘Who’s that?’ — I’d see if he recognized me on the cover.
Radcliffe added.
The child’s lack of recognition provides Radcliffe with the chance to maintain the boundary between his public persona and his private role as a parent.

He didn’t [recognize me], which is great,
the actor explained.
For as long as I can just be his dad, and he won’t know me as anything else, I will maintain that for as long as I can.
Radcliffe Prefers Son to Discover Harry Potter Separately
Radcliffe, who welcomed his son with girlfriend Erin Darke in April 2023, expressed that he is not eager to have his child watch the original Harry Potter movies if he becomes interested in the story. Instead, he hopes the upcoming HBO series will serve as the introduction to the wizarding world, allowing his son to experience the story without Radcliffe’s direct involvement.
Hopefully I can just put that on, and he doesn’t have to watch me in it,
Radcliffe said, calling that situation “honestly, the ideal.”
However, Radcliffe is open to reading the J.K. Rowling books to his son, viewing the novels differently since his relationship to them is not as personal as the films.
If he gets into them, I totally will,
Radcliffe remarked.
But I don’t think I’ll nudge him toward them, because I don’t think I’ll need to — he’ll find them eventually.
Upcoming HBO Series Brings New Harry Potter Adaptation
The highly anticipated HBO Harry Potter series is scheduled to premiere in early 2027, offering a fresh take on the wizarding world. Meanwhile, viewers can watch all the original Harry Potter movies on HBO Max and Peacock, keeping the legacy accessible to fans old and new.
Radcliffe’s approach highlights his desire to balance his celebrated career with his personal life, especially as a father seeking to define his relationship with his son on his own terms.
