Ryan Coogler, known for directing the film Sinners, recently shared his enthusiasm for romantic comedies, revealing that he is open to exploring this genre in the future. During an interview with Deadline, he emphasized his desire to work across a broad range of genres, highlighting his passion for diverse storytelling.
Coogler’s Desire to Explore All Genres
Coogler made it clear that he does not want to limit himself to any particular type of film. He stated,
“When it comes to genres that I haven’t done that I would like to do, the best answer I think is all of them.”
He explained that his motivation to continue creating films is fueled by his personal life, mentioning,
“I got kids, so I’m hoping to be around for a long time, and I’m hoping to work for as long as I can. There’s not a genre of movie that I don’t love. So, I hope to work on all of them.”
Admiration for When Harry Met Sally Inspires Coogler
The director also expressed a particular appreciation for the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, directed by Rob Reiner. He described it as a significant influence on his outlook toward the genre. Coogler said,
“I’d like to make a soup-to-nuts. Rest in peace, Rob Reiner, you know what I mean, but When Harry Met Sally is one of my movies that I think about with him. And to me, that’s such a solid romantic comedy that feels adult in whole, and it has eternal relevance, you know?”
Looking Forward to Creating a Rom-Com
Encouraged by the lasting impact of films like When Harry Met Sally, Coogler expressed his hope to produce a romantic comedy with similar qualities. He concluded the conversation by stating,
“I would love to make a rom-com that works like that one day,”
showing his excitement and optimism about branching into this genre in his career.
