Timothée Chalamet shared an unsettling incident where a former co-star questioned his acting credentials during a project involving an ensemble cast. The actor revealed this awkward moment in a recent conversation with Matthew McConaughey, highlighting how his training was dismissed by a peer on set.
During the discussion, Chalamet recounted how the co-star challenged his abilities by focusing on his lack of formal conservatory training, an attack that questioned his legitimacy as an actor.
“No names, but the guy was a punk. He asked me what conservatory I had gone to, and I said I didn’t go to an acting conservatory. And he said, ‘Well, you haven’t trained as an actor then.’ And we were all part of an ensemble.”
How Chalamet Developed Resilience Against Unwarranted Criticism
Despite the barbed remark, Timothée explained his approach to handling such criticisms, revealing a hardened attitude toward unsolicited advice. He mentioned that he’s learned to ignore people who seem more interested in giving advice for their own satisfaction than out of genuine concern.
“I always said, ‘Beware of the people in life that get more of the advice they give you than you get at the advice.’ They’re thrilled by the act of giving you advice. All of a sudden you can’t listen to what they’re saying anymore because they’re flexing on you so hard.”
He clarified that the person who insulted him was not Matthew McConaughey, with whom he has a respectful relationship.
“You never did that to me, though, which I’m grateful for.”
Reflecting on Their Early Collaboration in ‘Interstellar’
The dialogue took place during an intimate Variety interview between Chalamet and McConaughey, revisiting their shared work in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed film, Interstellar. At the time of filming in 2013, Chalamet was only 17 years old, still balancing the decision between pursuing acting or continuing his education.
In the movie, Chalamet played Tom, the youngest child of Cooper, McConaughey’s character.
He shared how McConaughey’s professionalism and kindness profoundly influenced him during that formative period.
“I remember you had a yoga mat, and you’d be working out and sleeping on set. It was all very strange to me. But it was super inspiring. I just can’t thank you enough for being warm to me at that time, when you had no reason to be warm to me. It just changed my life, man.”
In response, McConaughey expressed his appreciation for the younger actor’s words.
“You were pretty easy to be warm to.”
Why ‘Interstellar’ Remains Timothée Chalamet’s Favorite Film Experience
Chalamet also revealed that despite his rise to stardom with later leading roles, Interstellar holds a special place in his career. He considers it his favorite project and holds deep admiration for McConaughey’s portrayal of Cooper, describing it as one of the actor’s finest performances.
“Man, that remains my favorite project I’ve ever been in. I think it’s your most fantastic role. I know you were coming off ‘Dallas Buyers Club,’ but that movie, to me, was the origin point in seeing how you carried yourself on set, how seriously you and Christopher Nolan took the work.”
He explained that the experience gave him confidence to take his craft seriously during a stage in life often marked by uncertainty.
“It gave me a license. Coming out of high school, it’s hard to take yourself super seriously. You can feel like you’re wasting time or stuck-up or something.”
The Lasting Impact of Early Career Experiences on Chalamet’s Growth
Timothée Chalamet’s story underscores the challenges young actors face when navigating their careers in the industry, particularly when confronting doubts from colleagues questioning their background or approach. His ability to overcome such negativity and draw inspiration from mentors like Matthew McConaughey highlights the resilience required in acting.
The insight into his interactions during Interstellar also sheds light on how formative experiences shape an actor’s trajectory, offering perspective on the importance of supportive relationships in highly competitive environments.
