Timothée Chalamet Teases Intense New Paul in Dune Part Three

Timothée Chalamet has expressed growing confidence as he returns to play Paul Atreides in Dune Part Three, revealing that his latest performance allowed him to explore new dimensions of the character more freely than in the earlier films. During a conversation with Matthew McConaughey at a Variety and CNN event at the University of Texas at Austin, Chalamet shared insights into the creative influences that shaped his approach for the highly anticipated conclusion to Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy.

Inspirations from Iconic Performances Boost Chalamet’s Boldness

While discussing his role, Chalamet referenced several legendary actors as sources of inspiration, including McConaughey’s work in Interstellar, Heath Ledger’s in The Dark Knight, and Marlon Brando’s in Apocalypse Now. He clarified that he was not equating himself with these icons but was motivated by their ability to take risks on a grand scale.

“Let’s just say, it’s these big movies where you could sneak in something. A curveball,”

Chalamet explained during the talk.

Collaboration with Co-Star Oscar Isaac Encouraged Theatrical Risks

Chalamet credited his co-star Oscar Isaac’s fearless theatrical style as a catalyst for his evolving portrayal. Isaac’s willingness to embrace a Shakespearean kind of heightened performance inspired Chalamet to experiment beyond his previous naturalistic roles.

“He treated it in a Shakespearean way — to play it heightened and not really care about it being heightened,”

said Chalamet, admitting he initially felt challenged by the film’s futuristic tone but was persuaded to take “more liberty than ever.”

From Intimidation to Artistic Rhythm on Set

Coming into the project after more grounded dramas like Beautiful Boy and Call Me By Your Name, Chalamet found the scope of Dune intimidating at first. However, over time, especially during the third installment, he and director Denis Villeneuve developed a strong creative rhythm, allowing for greater freedom in performance.

“I was coming off ‘Beautiful Boy’ and ‘Call Me by Your Name’, and movies that were a lot more naturalistic, and this was a huge movie, so I felt intimidated. But especially on this third one, all the great shit you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice. And with Denis, we really had a good rhythm. It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing,”

Chalamet shared.

Significance of Chalamet’s Performance Evolution and the Trilogy’s Impact

Chalamet’s growing freedom to experiment with his portrayal of Paul Atreides signals a turning point for the trilogy’s emotional and dramatic depth. His newfound willingness to incorporate bold, unconventional choices could add layers of complexity to the final chapter’s narrative. As the trilogy moves toward a climax set against political intrigue and shifting alliances, fans can expect an intense and transformative performance that reflects both the character’s and actor’s evolution.
