Timothée Chalamet Teases Big Swing in Final Dune Role

Timothée Chalamet has revealed that the upcoming third installment of the Dune franchise will mark his final appearance as Paul Atreides. During an event hosted by Variety, he hinted at an ambitious transformation in his portrayal for Dune: Part Three, the film adaptation of the second book, Messiah, by Frank Herbert. This continuation sees Paul’s story unfold more than a decade after the previous movie, tackling complex and darker themes that elevate the character’s internal struggles and political challenges.

Exploring Paul’s Darker Side in Messiah’s Storyline

Dune: Part Three adapts the narrative where Paul Atreides, now Emperor, confronts deep conspiracies within his own family, emphasizing the catastrophic consequences of his rise to power. The novel’s focus on these troubling elements highlights Paul’s tragic evolution, which Chalamet described as reminiscent of iconic cinematic villains such as Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight and Marlon Brando’s Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now.

Chalamet reflected on this comparison, stating,

“Let me rephrase that… I cannot put myself in that same boat [acting-wise],”

followed by

“Let’s just say, it’s these big movies where you could sneak in something. A curveball.”

Chalamet Embraces a Bold and Experimental Approach

The actor acknowledged that while he initially felt overwhelmed by the futuristic and vast scope of Dune when he first began, particularly coming from smaller, naturalistic dramas like Beautiful Boy and Call Me by Your Name, he has grown more confident with this film’s audacious setting. He highlighted that the third film offers him his most daring interpretation of Paul Atreides yet.

“I felt kind of thrown by the futurism [on 2021’s Dune],”

Chalamet explained before adding,

“But especially on this third one, all the great s**t you see on screen is from freedom of movement and freedom of choice. And with Denis [Villeneuve, director], we really had a good rhythm. It’s the eeriest one. It’s a big swing.”

Immersing in the Science Fiction World with Detail and Care

Paul’s return to piloting an ornithopter—a key sci-fi vehicle in the Dune universe shaped like an insect—is handled with greater attention to detail by Chalamet this time around. Unlike earlier installments, he developed a personal connection with the fantastical cockpit, aiming to make his performance authentic despite the fictional controls and hieroglyphs.

He described his process:

“As opposed to the first movie, I came out early and studied the control panel — all sorts of hieroglyphics and things that aren’t tethered to reality,”

and continued,

“I wanted to know what each button did, and invent a dynamic for myself with it.”

This dedication also reflected a heightened sense of reverence for the role, as he knew it would be his last portrayal of Paul Atreides.

“I didn’t want to be complacent about a single moment. Everything was sacred, and it was my last time doing a Dune film, so I really wanted to treat it as sacred,”

Chalamet remarked. He further emphasized,

“People can get complacent, but I was more intense on the third one. It felt like that was the natural momentum, so I wanted to push against that as hard as I could.”

Future of the Franchise and Chalamet’s Departure

Chalamet’s confirmation that he is stepping away after Dune: Part Three aligns with the trajectory of Frank Herbert’s novels, where Paul Atreides’ role diminishes significantly in the following story, Children of Dune, set nine years later. Although Paul does appear sporadically in that book, it suggests that if the series continues, another actor may be cast to represent an older Paul.

Denis Villeneuve, the director, has also indicated that Dune: Part Three is the last Dune film he intends to direct himself, but left the door open for future adaptations under different leadership. Speaking to Variety in late 2024, Villeneuve said,

“I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in [Part Three], there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books,”

later adding,

“They become more and more esoteric. It’s a bit more tricky to adapt, but I’m not closing the door. I will not [direct more Dune films] myself, but it could happen with someone else.”

Anticipating the Release and Cast Reunion

While Chalamet is currently busy promoting the acclaimed sports drama Marty Supreme, fans can look forward to Dune: Part Three’s release in cinemas in December 2026. The film will feature returning actors Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh, as well as newcomer Robert Pattinson, promising a powerful ensemble for this climactic chapter of the saga.
