Ryan Coogler has achieved a historic milestone by winning the BAFTA award for original screenplay for his film Sinners, becoming the first Black person to receive this honor. This landmark moment took place during a ceremony that celebrated his work and adds to Coogler’s already significant impact on the awards season.
Breaking New Ground with BAFTA Victory
Coogler’s victory at the BAFTA Awards marks a significant breakthrough in the recognition of Black screenwriters within the film industry. Upon accepting the award, he expressed his surprise and gratitude, stating,
“I didn’t expect that, This is nerve-wracking.”
The applause from the audience highlighted the importance of his achievement in a category historically devoid of Black winners.
Coogler’s Personal Reflection on Community and Creativity
In his acceptance speech, Coogler emphasized the role his community played in his success. He shared heartfelt thoughts on inspiration and motivation for other writers:
“I come from a community that loves me. They made me believe that I could do this, that I could be a writer. And it was amazing to be accepted into the community of film actors, the community of Los Angeles … For all the writers out there, when y’all look at that blank page, think of who you love, think of anybody who you’ve seen in pain that you identify with and wish they felt better and let that love motivate you. I’ll be forever grateful for this, thank you all.”

Competition and Oscar Prospects
Coogler’s screenplay for Sinners stood out among strong competition, surpassing entries such as I Swear by Kirk Jones, Marty Supreme by Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie, The Secret Agent by Kleber Mendonça Filho, and Sentimental Value by Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier. This victory positions Coogler as a serious contender for the upcoming Academy Awards, where he will compete again with Bronstein and Safdie’s Marty Supreme, Vogt and Trier’s Sentimental Value, along with Robert Kaplow’s Blue Moon and the team behind It Was Just an Accident (Mehdi Mahmoudian, Jafar Panahi, Shadmehr Rastin, and Nader Saivar).

Only one Black screenwriter has previously won the Oscar for original screenplay: Jordan Peele for the 2017 horror film Get Out, a genre parallel to Coogler’s Sinners.
Record-Breaking Accomplishments for Sinners
Beyond Coogler’s personal achievement, Sinners garnered widespread recognition, being the second-most nominated film at the BAFTA Awards this year with 13 nominations—setting a record for a film directed by a Black filmmaker. It also broke the record for the most Oscar nominations ever, receiving 16 nods. These accolades underline the film’s critical acclaim and cultural impact.
Looking Ahead to the Oscars
Final voting for the 98th Academy Awards will occur between February 26 and March 5, with the ceremony scheduled for March 15. This year’s event will be broadcast on ABC and hosted by Conan O’Brien. Ryan Coogler’s BAFTA victory boosts anticipation for his potential success at the Oscars, signaling a possible historic win that would further elevate his status in the film industry.
