In 2021, James Gunn revealed that writer Charlie Kaufman, known for Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, once proposed a dark adaptation of the 1960s sitcom Gilligan’s Island. Their vision portrayed the stranded castaways, struggling for survival, ultimately resorting to cannibalism. Warner Bros. expressed interest in producing the film during the late 1990s, but the project faced strong opposition from the original creator Sherwood Schwartz, who disapproved of turning his cherished characters into cannibals.
Attempts to Revive the Project and Estate Objections
Years later, in 2014, after the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn sought a new project and revisited Kaufman’s concept with hopes to direct it. Although Kaufman and Warner Bros. remained supportive, the film was once again blocked, this time due to objections from Schwartz’s estate. Gunn expressed his willingness to proceed if given a green light, tweeting,
“Anyway, if the Schwartz estate changes their mind, I’m here,”
demonstrating his continued interest in the project.
Changing Attitudes and Scheduling Conflicts
This story stirred considerable attention, prompting Schwartz’s family to reconsider the idea. According to Gunn’s update on Threads last year,
“The Schwartz estate contacted me and told me they’d be happy to let me do it.”
Despite this approval, Gunn was already committed to multiple projects, including three upcoming films and a TV series, making it unlikely he would begin work on Gilligan’s Island in the near future. Still, the possibility remains open for the future.
History and Future Prospects of ‘Gilligan’s Island’ Adaptations
The original Gilligan’s Island aired on CBS for three seasons between 1964 and 1967, followed by three TV movies featuring most of the original cast. Over the years, ideas for a theatrical adaptation—without the darker elements—have surfaced repeatedly. Jim Carrey was once rumored to be interested in the role of Gilligan, and before his passing, Sherwood Schwartz expressed enthusiasm about a remake starring Michael Cera as Gilligan and Beyoncé as Ginger, stating in 2008,
“There isn’t anybody sexier than Beyoncé!”
