Ethan Hawke Lands First Lead Actor Oscar Nomination After Decade

Ethan Hawke has been a consistent presence in film for many years, but it was a role created by his longtime collaborator Richard Linklater that finally earned him his first Academy Award nomination for lead actor. This milestone comes after more than a decade of anticipation for Hawke, who was nominated for his portrayal of lyricist Lorenz Hart in Linklater’s film Blue Moon.

A Decade-Long Journey to Recognition

Hawke and Linklater’s partnership is deeply rooted in a shared passion for theater, a bond formed through numerous theater outings over many years. Hawke explained the uniqueness of the role, saying,

“I don’t think anybody else really would’ve thought of me for this character,”

and added,

“But because he knows me so well, he knew how passionately I would feel about it.”

The script for Blue Moon first came into Hawke’s hands over ten years ago, and the prolonged development period allowed him to prepare fully without pressure. He reflected,

“I felt happy that I’ve been able to dream about it for 10 years,”

also noting,

“I didn’t have to rush to be ready.”

Immersing in the World of Lorenz Hart and Musical Theater

To embody the role authentically, Hawke devoted himself to exploring the musical theater history surrounding Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. He delved into biographies and immersed himself in interpretations of their work, exploring covers by artists like Chet Baker and Bob Dylan. This careful preparation helped him fill what he described as his “imaginative tank,” pacing his research to internalize the character deeply. Blue Moon premiered at the Berlin Film Festival a year ago and has since drawn a devoted audience, with Hawke recently returning to Berlin amidst the height of awards season.

Gratitude and Reflection on Craft

Hawke recognizes that luck has played a role alongside his dedication.

“It’s so hard to penetrate the zeitgeist right now without a tremendous amount of money in advertising,”

he said.

“When that happens, you kind of feel this wash of gratitude of being really lucky.”

Talking about his approach to acting, Hawke invoked his late friend Philip Seymour Hoffman’s philosophy:

“You have to walk a razor’s edge of feeling like it’s the most important thing in the world,”

while also approaching it

“like it’s a game that is so much fun to play.”

He cited Uta Hagen’s Respect for Acting and Sidney Lumet’s Making Movies as guiding influences that treat acting as a disciplined craft that can be learned and mastered.

What Hawke Takes Away from the Role

Playing Lorenz Hart has given Hawke meaningful experiences beyond the character himself. He values the connection with his co-stars Andrew Scott, Margaret Qualley, and Robert Capelli Jr., but above all, he treasures the steady support from Linklater. “Rick’s unflagging friendship,” Hawke said, “That’s what I take away.” This nomination not only honors Hawke’s performance but also highlights the strength of his enduring creative partnership with Linklater.

As awards season continues, Ethan Hawke’s Oscar nomination marks a significant moment both in his career and in the recognition of heartfelt, long-cultivated collaboration in the film industry. His journey exemplifies the combination of passion, patience, and persistence required to achieve such a milestone.
