Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot has officially been approved, with actress Danielle Deadwyler announced as the first co-lead. Known for his work on Black Panther and Sinners, Coogler brings his passion for the paranormal drama series to Hulu, where he will write and direct the pilot episode. The project aims to deliver new episodes that are truly frightening, revitalizing the beloved franchise for both loyal fans and new viewers.
A Fresh Casting Choice and Story Overview
Danielle Deadwyler, recognized for her roles in films like Till, Carry-On, and The Piano Lesson, will take one of the lead roles. On television, Deadwyler has appeared in Station Eleven and is set to feature in the upcoming season of Euphoria. While the identity of the other lead has yet to be announced, the reboot centers on two accomplished FBI agents who come together unexpectedly to investigate unexplained phenomena, marking the revival of a previously closed division.
Connections to Original Cast and Production Team
Although details remain sparse about returning cast members, Coogler has confirmed conversations with Gillian Anderson, the original series’ iconic star.
“She’s incredible and fingers crossed there,”
Coogler said.
“We’re going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real X-Files fans and maybe find some new ones.”
Anderson herself expressed support for Coogler’s involvement, stating,
“I spoke to him, and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person and best of luck, call me.’ At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good and it feels like the right time – perhaps.”
Chris Carter, the original showrunner who launched The X-Files in 1993, will return as an executive producer, further grounding the reboot in its classic roots.

The Legacy of The X-Files and Coogler’s Recent Success
The X-Files initially aired from 1993 to 2002, spanning nine seasons before its revival in 2016 for two additional seasons. Its cultural impact was significant, drawing up to 27 million viewers in the United States during its peak and spawning two feature films. This revival comes as Coogler recently earned recognition as the first Black recipient of the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for his film Sinners. That film is also nominated for a record-setting 16 Academy Awards, highlighting Coogler’s rising influence in the film industry.
Looking Ahead: What This Reboot Could Mean for Fans and the Genre
With Coogler’s creative vision and Deadwyler’s emerging talent, this X-Files reboot is poised to blend fresh storytelling with the eerie legacy of the original. As production moves forward on Hulu, fans can anticipate a series that honors the show’s history while exploring new mysteries within paranormal investigations. The involvement of key figures like Gillian Anderson and Chris Carter suggests an effort to balance respect for the original with innovative scares and narratives.
