Chris Hemsworth: Leaving LA Was My Greatest Decision Ever

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth described moving his family from Los Angeles back to Australia as the best choice he ever made. After struggling to enjoy life amid Hollywood’s pressures, Hemsworth relocated to a large farm in the Australian Outback, embracing a lifestyle more connected to his upbringing. This move allowed him to escape the constant presence of paparazzi and the artificial demands of city life, finding renewed happiness closer to home.

Motivation Behind Leaving Hollywood’s Spotlight

Hemsworth explained that the decision to move was closely tied to the birth of his children and the family’s dissatisfaction with their setup in Los Angeles. Although they were based in LA, most of Hemsworth’s filming took place elsewhere, leading to a disconnect from their home life. He recalled feeling burdened by the invasive paparazzi and the trappings that come with living in a high-profile city environment.

“It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in LA and not enjoying it, you know? Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else,”

Hemsworth said on the SmartLess podcast.

“And then … you’d come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of, you know, living in that space,”

he added.

Family Life and Lifestyle in Australia

Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky, who married in 2010, share three children—a daughter and twin boys. The family now enjoys life on a sprawling farm outside Melbourne, where the kids have ample space to explore and play freely. Hemsworth likened coming home to their farm as a holiday, offering a stark contrast to their previous urban lifestyle.

“You know, when you come back from work, you wanna go on a holiday? Like coming home for me is – it feels like a holiday. We have big farm and horses and motorbikes and surf,”

Hemsworth said.

Roots in the Australian Outback Inspired His Passion

Growing up near Melbourne, about 20 minutes from the city, Hemsworth and his brothers—Liam and Luke—were surrounded by bushland and rainforest. The natural surroundings fostered a sense of adventure and imaginative play, which Hemsworth credits as the origin of his interest in acting. With neighbors located kilometers away, the Hemsworth siblings spent their time exploring and embodying different characters outdoors.

“We lived about 20 minutes from, like, the main sort of suburban areas in Melbourne up in the hills,”

Hemsworth recalled.

“And the nearest neighbor was a kilometer or two away. It was just all bush land and rainforest sort of set up around us,”

he added.

“And so we would just [have] … adventures outdoors and playing different characters. And I think that’s, to be honest, where the sort of intrigue or interest into that transportation into another.”

Early Career and Breakthrough Roles

Before establishing himself as a global movie star, Hemsworth worked repairing breast milk pumps for Fisher & Paykel, an Australian appliance maker. He described cleaning and fixing motor belts on rental pumps for pharmacies as his first job.

“And they would come back to us, and I’d have to repair them when, like the little belt, the motor belt would break. You’d also have to clean all the dried milk that was on them,”

Hemsworth remembered.

“So, I’d have a toothbrush and spray and wipe and – that was my first job.”

Hemsworth’s acting career began in the early 2000s with small parts on Australian television, leading to his breakout role in the soap opera Home and Away. His significant leap to international recognition arrived with the movie Cabin in the Woods, which was filmed in 2009 but released after he had become famous as Marvel’s Thor. This role catapulted him into several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers: Endgame, and most recently Thor: Love and Thunder.

Family Ties Within the Acting World

Chris Hemsworth’s brothers, Liam and Luke Hemsworth, have also pursued acting careers, creating a notable family presence in the entertainment industry. The siblings grew up together near Melbourne, sharing a childhood immersed in outdoor adventures that shaped their personal and professional paths.

Recognition and Personal Reflections

In 2024, Hemsworth received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking a milestone in his career. During his acceptance speech, he expressed deep gratitude to his wife Elsa Pataky, acknowledging her unwavering support and sacrifices throughout his journey.

“I want to say thank you to my beautiful wife, who has been here for my entire career basically by my side, endlessly encouraging and supportive,”

Hemsworth said.

“And it doesn’t get lost on me that she put aside her own dreams in order to support mine and, again, [I am] forever in your debt.”

“The fact [is] that nothing that I do, any of these moments, these special occasions and events, none of it is special without you by my side. I love you.”

The Lasting Impact of Returning Home

Chris Hemsworth’s move back to Australia reflects a profound personal shift, prioritizing family well-being and a more grounded lifestyle over the glamour of Hollywood. This decision has enabled him to create a healthier environment for his children and himself, while continuing to thrive in his acting career. Looking ahead, this balance may serve as a model for other celebrities seeking fulfillment beyond the spotlight.
