Danielle Deadwyler has been cast in a leading role for the new Ryan Coogler X-Files reboot, which Hulu has officially greenlit. The revival, set to bring a fresh perspective to the iconic sci-fi series, will feature Deadwyler as one of the two main FBI agents exploring cases of unexplained phenomena.
Creative Team Behind the New X-Files Series
Ryan Coogler, who made history as the first Black winner of the BAFTA for Original Screenplay with his film Sinners, will write and direct the pilot episode of the reboot. Jennifer Yale, known for her work on See and The Copenhagen Test, is serving as showrunner. Meanwhile, Chris Carter, the original creator and showrunner of The X-Files, will participate as a non-writing executive producer on the project.
Fresh Take on a Cult Classic
The reboot’s official description reveals that two highly decorated FBI agents with very different backgrounds are brought together when assigned to a previously inactive division focused on paranormal cases. This contrasts with the original series’ approach, which centered on Agent Dana Scully and her partnership with the believer Agent Fox Mulder. It remains unclear if characters Dana or Mulder, played by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny respectively, will appear in Coogler’s version, as the other lead role has yet to be cast.
Development and Expectations
Initial reports about this reimagined version surfaced in 2023, highlighting a commitment to a diverse cast. Though updates have been limited, Coogler has hinted that the show aims to deliver chilling and unsettling episodes.
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it,”
he said.
“Some of these episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary.”
Production Background and Series Legacy
The reboot is developed under Walt Disney Television, with the original series produced by 20th Century Fox Television. The X-Files originally aired for nine seasons between 1993 and 2001, later returning for two more seasons in 2016 and 2018. A planned animated comedy spin-off reported in 2020 was subsequently canceled and will not move forward at Fox.
What This Means for Fans and the Future of the Franchise
This revival promises to breathe new life into a well-loved science fiction series by introducing fresh characters and storylines while respecting the franchise’s roots. The involvement of Ryan Coogler as a writer and director adds notable prestige and anticipation for a compelling, intense reboot that could attract longtime fans and new viewers alike. As casting continues and production progresses, audiences can expect a bold and diverse take on the paranormal investigations at the heart of The X-Files.
