Chris Hemsworth revealed he had to pause filming the popular YouTube show Hot Ones in May 2024 after feeling extremely nauseous. The Marvel star appeared on the series to promote his film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, where guests answer questions while eating increasingly spicy hot wings. Despite completing all 10 wings, Hemsworth admitted the experience became overwhelming near the end, forcing a break in recording.
Behind the Scenes of Hemsworth’s Hot Ones Experience
Hemsworth described his growing confidence as he sampled each wing but warned that the final flavors presented a tougher challenge.
“I did (all 10 wings). I was getting really cocky and kind of just more, more, more, more – and this one’s not so bad – and by the ninth or 10th one, it’s just a different game,”
he said on the SmartLess podcast. The recording crew had to stop the taping because he was about to vomit, and they gave him ice cream and milk to ease the heat.
Despite making it through the entire episode, Hemsworth faced severe aftereffects. He had not eaten all day before recording, and the intense heat from the wings hit him hard once filming ended. He recalled,
“We were all supposed to go out for dinner that night, and I hadn’t eaten all day. By the time I did the show, the first thing I put in my stomach was this bowl of hot sauce.”
He then spent 12 hours suffering in his hotel room bathroom, describing his condition as,
“I was just on the floor. Nothing was operating properly. Everything wanted to come out.”
Other Celebrities Have Endured Similar Challenges on Hot Ones
Hemsworth’s difficult experience is not unique among Hot Ones guests. Jennifer Lawrence, who appeared on the show in 2023, also suffered from severe nausea shortly after filming. Lawrence shared on Watch What Happens Live that she “passionately threw up” in her hotel room within minutes of finishing. She said,
“My stomach gave me, like, eight minutes to get upstairs and then she… she…(vomited).”
The Enduring Appeal and Risks of the Hot Ones Format
Hot Ones continues to challenge high-profile guests like Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence with its format of combining interview questions and escalating spice levels. While the setup often yields candid moments, it can also lead to physically intense reactions. Hemsworth’s admission highlights the sometimes painful toll of participating in the show, despite its popularity. As celebrities tackle the hotter wings, fans can expect more dramatic and raw interviews, even if that means guests occasionally face bouts of nausea or worse after filming.
