Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed filmmaker known for directing Black Panther and Sinners, has hinted at plans to explore the romantic comedy genre after completing his upcoming projects, including Black Panther 3 and the Hulu reboot of The X-Files. With a reputation as one of today’s most distinguished directors and Sinners earning 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, Coogler’s next move has drawn considerable interest. His comments reveal a hopeful and determined outlook toward expanding his artistic range.
Coogler’s Inspirations and Desire to Venture into Rom-Com Territory
In a recent extensive interview with Deadline alongside Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo, Coogler shared his admiration for romantic comedies, particularly the late Rob Reiner’s classic When Harry Met Sally. He expressed his eagerness to tackle genres he has yet to explore, emphasizing his love for all kinds of stories and his intent to have a long-lasting career.
“When it comes to genres that I haven’t done that I would like to do, the best answer I think is all of them,”
Coogler said.
I got kids, so I’m hoping to be around for a long time, and I’m hoping to work for as long as I can. There’s not a genre of movie that I don’t love.
He further elaborated on his admiration for Reiner’s work, noting,
“So, I hope to work on all of them. I’d like to make a soup-to-nuts. Rest in peace, Rob Reiner, you know what I mean, but When Harry Met Sally is one of my movies that I think about with him. And to me, that’s such a solid romantic comedy that feels adult in whole, and it has eternal relevance, you know?”
Coogler concluded by sharing his aspiration,
“love to make a rom-com that works like that one day.”
Future Outlook: Potential Romantic Comedy After Black Panther 3
While Coogler is currently focused on helming Black Panther 3 and developing the X-Files reboot, reports indicate other projects with his involvement remain under the radar. This silence has fueled speculation that a romantic comedy could be his next directorial venture following Black Panther 3’s release. His willingness to embrace new genres reflects both cautious strategy and creative optimism as he balances high-profile blockbusters with personal filmmaking ambitions.
