Matt Dillon has been announced as the lead actor for the upcoming adaptation of The Magnificent Seven series on MGM+, Variety confirmed. Dillon will take on the role of Chris Adams, originally portrayed by Yul Brynner in the 1960 film. The series is set to premiere as MGM+ moves forward with this retelling, centered on the iconic Western tale of hired guns protecting a vulnerable community.

The storyline is set in the 1880s American frontier, focusing on a group of mercenaries hired to defend a Quaker village after it suffers a deadly attack by a land baron’s hired men. The series will delve deeply into the moral complexities the mercenaries face as they contemplate using violence to protect a people committed to nonviolence.

His credits also include notable movies like The House That Jack Built, Wild Things, There’s Something About Mary, The Outsiders, and Asteroid City. Brynner reprised the part in the 1966 sequel Return of the Seven, followed by George Kennedy in 1969’s Guns of the Magnificent Seven, and Lee Van Cleef in The Magnificent Seven Ride! The CBS television series The Magnificent Seven featured Michael Biehn as Chris Larabee, a character inspired by Adams.
