Lupita Nyong’o Reveals She Has Over 50 Fibroids

Actress Lupita Nyong’o, known for her KenyanMexican heritage and acclaimed roles in Hollywood, disclosed that she has more than 50 uterine fibroids. She was first diagnosed with these non-cancerous tumors over a decade ago, and after undergoing surgery to remove them, the fibroids eventually returned.

Fibroids develop from the muscle tissue in the uterus and their growth is influenced by high estrogen levels, which can increase both the number and size of the tumors. Nyong’o shared her latest diagnosis on the Today show, describing the challenge she faces: surgery or enduring persistent pain.

The Severity of Lupita’s Condition and Its Impact on Her Plans

During the interview, Nyong’o explained that her initial surgery removed 23 fibroids, but two years ago, she was informed that her total fibroid count had risen past 50. Despite this, she is hesitant to undergo another surgery because the procedure is invasive and could affect her ability to have children in the future.

She also described the size of her largest fibroid using a common medical analogy involving fruit, saying it is “the size of an orange.”

The first time I got the fibroids taken out, they took out 23. And this time, I’ve been informed two years ago that I have over 50. And I’m being faced with the same options: surgery or live with the pain.

When you have fibroids, doctors usually use fruit to explain to you what size your fibroids are. So your fibroid could be the size of a grape. My biggest fibroid is the size of an orange.

Emotional Toll and Community Support

Nyong’o revealed the emotional burden her diagnosis caused, including feelings of shame and isolation as she wondered what might have caused the fibroids. Speaking publicly about her condition has empowered her and connected her with a broader community of women facing similar health struggles.

I felt shame. What did I do to cause them? And I felt very alone and quite scared for my reproductive health. I’m excited right now because speaking up has really empowered me. I’ve found community. I’ve locked arms with women who have been fighting this fight for a long time.

Recognizing Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Symptoms connected to uterine fibroids include heavy periods, pain or pressure in the pelvic area, frequent or difficult urination, abdominal swelling, constipation, lower back discomfort, and pain during intercourse. However, some women may experience no symptoms at all.

Lupita Nyong’o’s Role Beyond Health: Advocacy and Speaking Out

In addition to discussing her health, Nyong’o has been vocal about her 2020 experience with disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, who is incarcerated at Rikers Island. Weinstein faces accusations of assaulting multiple actresses who sought film roles.

There’s a lot of power in speaking up,

she said.

Nyong’o has been approached by other women sharing their #MeToo stories, which has encouraged her advocacy work in supporting survivors.

I spoke up and the amount of support I got hearing women say ‘me too’ and share their stories made me feel less alone and it’s honestly what has bolstered me to do the work that I do now.

Looking Ahead: The Impact of Lupita’s Disclosure

By openly discussing her diagnosis and struggles with fibroids, Lupita Nyong’o sheds light on a condition that affects many women but remains underrepresented in public conversation. Her decision to share her story not only empowers those facing similar health issues but also encourages broader awareness and dialogue about reproductive health challenges.

As she continues to weigh her medical options, including the invasive nature of surgery and her desire to have children, her openness could inspire more understanding and support for women dealing with fibroids across the globe.
