“Two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.”

Ryan Coogler will oversee the pilot as writer, director, and executive producer through his production company, Proximity Media. Coogler’s partners Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler also executive produce, with Simone Harris serving as co-executive producer. Jennifer Yale has been appointed showrunner and executive producer, and original series creator Chris Carter will contribute as an executive producer as well.

The pilot is a joint production between Disney’s Onyx Collective and 20th Television.

Background on The X-Files Franchise

The original X-Files ran from 1993 to 2002, starring David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, FBI agents dedicated to exploring mysterious and supernatural cases known as the X-Files. The series saw a revival spanning two seasons in 2016 and 2018, with the original stars and creator Chris Carter returning. It was also followed by two feature films: the 1998 The X-Files and 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Neither David Duchovny nor Gillian Anderson are involved in this new Hulu pilot, signaling a shift toward a reimagined cast and story direction.

Potential Impact and Future Expectations

This development could renew interest in the X-Files universe for a modern audience, blending Coogler’s distinct creative vision with the franchise’s foundational intrigue. As Disney expands its content offerings through Hulu, this reboot may introduce new storylines while honoring the original’s legacy. Viewers and fans alike will be watching closely to see how this new iteration of the X-Files evolves.
