Chris Hemsworth Calls Moving To Australia His Best Decision

Chris Hemsworth recently shared insights into his choice to leave Los Angeles with his family at the peak of his Marvel career during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast while promoting his latest film, Amazon MGM’s Crime 101. Hemsworth and his wife, Elsa Pataky, decided to move back to Australia five years into their marriage, seeking a lifestyle change away from the pressures of Hollywood.

The Motivation Behind Leaving Los Angeles

Hemsworth explained that the decision came around the time his sons were born, and the family was feeling settled but unhappy in L.A.

“It was right around the time my boys were born, and it was just, we kind of were set up in L.A. and not enjoying it, you know?”

Hemsworth said. He also described the challenges of living in Los Angeles during that period, especially the intrusion from paparazzi and the difficulties of being constantly in the public eye.

“Like nothing was shooting there. We were filming kind of everywhere else and then… you’d come home and paparazzi and all the sort of the trappings of, you know, living in that space,”

he added.

How the Move Has Affected His Career and Family Life

Despite relocating, Hemsworth emphasized that the move did not disrupt his acting career because his work required him to travel for filming frequently. He called the move the “greatest decision” for his family.

“You know, when you come back from work, you wanna go on a holiday? Like coming home for me is — it feels like a holiday,”

Hemsworth shared, highlighting the contrast between his life in Australia and the hectic environment of Los Angeles.

“We have a big farm and horses and motorbikes and surf.”

Context: Hollywood Production Trends and Hemsworth’s Career Timeline

Hemsworth’s decision to leave Los Angeles occurred years before the COVID-19 pandemic, which later contributed to significant disruptions in Hollywood productions. Recent reports indicate that production days in Los Angeles for film, television, and commercials dropped 12.3% in the final quarter of 2025 compared to the previous quarter, continuing a decline that began in 2022. Overall production volumes in 2025 were about half of what they were in 2019.

Hemsworth first appeared as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2011, after his Hollywood debut in 2009 as George Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot. By the time he chose to relocate to Australia, he had completed three Marvel films: The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. He continued acting in major projects like 2016’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Ghostbusters. Fans can expect to see Hemsworth reprise his role as Thor in the upcoming December release, Avengers: Doomsday.

Significance of Hemsworth’s Relocation Decision

Chris Hemsworth’s move to Australia reflects a growing trend among actors prioritizing quality of life over being permanently based in Los Angeles, especially during periods when local production slows. By returning to his home country, Hemsworth has created a lifestyle that offers both professional flexibility and a peaceful family environment. His experience may influence fellow entertainers considering similar moves away from traditional industry hubs.
