Zack Snyder Reveals Why Ben Affleck Is The Best Batman

During an interview marking the 10th anniversary of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder strongly defended Ben Affleck’s portrayal of Batman, declaring him the best Bruce Wayne. The film, which premiered a decade ago, introduced Affleck as the Dark Knight in a casting choice that sparked considerable debate.

How Snyder Decided Ben Affleck Was Right for the Role

Before finalizing the casting, Snyder sought a clear vision for how Batman should look and feel. He began the process by creating a visual representation, drawing Affleck’s face with the Bat cowl over it to see if the actor fit the part. This simple act helped Snyder commit to casting Affleck.

“I did a drawing where I took Ben’s face, and I put the cowl on it,”

Snyder stated.

“I know it sounds dumb, but I literally took a Sharpie and drew the cowl on top of some photocopy of Ben’s face. I guess I convinced myself in that moment that was the way.”

Why Affleck Embodied the Ideal Bruce Wayne

Snyder explained that Affleck’s appearance and demeanor aligned perfectly with his idea of Bruce Wayne as Gotham’s billionaire socialite and Batman as a formidable brawler. He emphasized the physical presence that Affleck brought to the role, which matched the director’s vision of a powerful, imposing Batman.

“He’s the most obvious Bruce Wayne, I think, of all the Batmans,”

Snyder said.

“Of anybody who’s played Batman, Ben is the best Bruce Wayne.”

“He’s also all the things I like in a Batman. He’s legitimately a big dude, right? He’s 6’5 with his boots on,”

Snyder added.

“He’s got that physicality that I always longed for in my cinematic Batman. I’ve always wanted him to be a brawler. I needed that. Even with what I did with the body and the suit and everything, I wanted him thick. I just wanted him to really be able to hurt you.”

The Casting Process and Convincing Affleck to Accept

After Snyder’s vision crystallized with his drawing, the next step was securing Affleck’s commitment. Snyder acknowledged that convincing Affleck took effort, but after discussions and shared enthusiasm for the character’s direction, Affleck agreed to embrace the role.

“But once I was locked in on it, and I had those few lunches and conversations with Ben, I felt like he understood that I cared deeply about what I kind of graphically wanted Batman to be, and I think he saw that and was like, ‘All right, F— it. Let’s do it.’”

Snyder recalled.
