Michael J. Fox made a stunning return to the spotlight with a heartfelt speech during a surprise appearance at the 2026 Actor Awards on Sunday night. The ceremony, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles and formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, featured Fox in a rare moment after years away from major awards events.
The event included a segment called I Am an Actor, introduced by host Kristen Bell, where guests shared what acting means to them. Well-known names such as Kristen Wiig, Teyana Taylor, Delroy Lindo, and Kate Hudson contributed before the cameras focused on Fox, who attended alongside his son, Sam. The audience responded with enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation lasting around fifteen seconds, celebrating the Back to the Future star’s appearance.
Reflections on His Journey and Career
In his speech, Fox reflected on his early days, recalling advice from a teacher after moving from Canada to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
Before I left school, I moved from Canada to L.A. to make it as an actor. A teacher of mine told me, ‘Fox, you’re not going to be cute forever.’ I didn’t know what to say to that, so I said, ‘Maybe just long enough, sir!’
he said.

Fox also credited the entertainment industry with changing his personal life profoundly by introducing him to his wife, actress Tracy Pollan. Married since 1988, the couple has four children together.
After a few years of dumpster diving in L.A., I ended up on Family Ties, where I received the biggest gift of my career: I met my wife, the actress Tracy Pollan, who played Ellen, my girlfriend, and she gave me four gifts… our four kids,
he shared.
Sometimes I like to remind them if it wasn’t for acting, they wouldn’t be here. By the way, he’s not an actor, he’s just my date. I’m Michael J. Fox, I’m a dad, and I’m an actor!
Ongoing Commitment and Select Acting Roles
Fox has long been vocal about his battle with Parkinson’s disease, which was diagnosed in the early 1990s and led him to step back from acting. In 2000, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research to advance treatment and awareness. Though officially retired from Hollywood in 2020, he has made selective appearances in recent years, including a voice role in 2025’s “Zootopia 2” and acting as Gerry in two episodes of Apple TV’s “Shrinking” season two.
Significance of the Appearance
This unexpected appearance at the 2026 Actor Awards highlights Fox’s enduring influence in the entertainment community and underscores his resilience despite health challenges. Fans and colleagues alike saw his return as an inspiring moment, reminding audiences of his lasting legacy and ongoing connection to acting. The event also suggested the possibility of further selective performances or public appearances in the future, as Fox continues to balance his personal life, advocacy work, and passion for acting.
