Jamie Lee Curtis Predicted Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter Role Early

Jamie Lee Curtis foresaw Daniel Radcliffe becoming the iconic Harry Potter even before he set foot at Hogwarts. The actress revealed this early prediction during a recent reunion with Radcliffe, recalling a moment on the set of The Tailor of Panama when she noticed young Daniel resembled the character from J.K. Rowling’s popular book series.

During a March 2 appearance on the Today show, Jamie described the scene vividly: the cast was filming near a swimming pool in Panama, and Radcliffe, who was very pale at the time, had to wear a fake tan for the role. This made him unable to join the other children in the water.

We were in the swimming pool,

Jamie said.

Daniel had to wear a fake tan because he was very pale and we were supposed to live in Panama, and all the kids were in the pool. He couldn’t go in the pool because he had a fake tan.

Jamie couldn’t help but compare young Daniel sitting by the pool to the boy illustrated on the covers of Rowling’s books. This comparison came before Daniel had even auditioned for the part of Harry Potter, the role that would define his career and captivate millions worldwide.

I remember he was sitting by the pool,

Jamie continued.

and I looked up at him at one point and I went, ‘Wait, you know, you look like that kid who’s on the cover of that book.’

Daniel later admitted that at the time of Jamie’s comment, his mother, Marcia Gresham, likely wasn’t thrilled about the suggestion, given the role’s potential pressure and exposure.

It was long before I was cast,

Daniel reflected.

I don’t think I knew about it at this point. I think my mum was probably looking at you like, ‘No, no, no, don’t mention it to him.’

Reflecting on a Defining Role and Passing the Torch

Though Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry Potter journey ended with the final film release in 2011, he has been revisiting the significance of the series, especially as a new generation of actors has been cast for the upcoming HBO adaptation. Radcliffe, alongside former co-stars Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, has shared mixed emotions about watching new young actors take on their legendary characters.

It’s one of those where I think we all just know how the others feel, because we’re also feeling it,

Daniel told People in February.

You just see the pictures of these kids, and you just want to grab them and hug them. That’s the impulse that I think that we, mainly, all have.

When asked about his hopes for the new series, which is scheduled to premiere in 2027, Daniel expressed his desire to avoid overshadowing the fresh cast, hoping they can create their own unique experience.

I would like not to be weird spectral phantoms in these children’s lives,

he told Screen Rant.

Just let them get on, it’s going to be a new, different thing.

Confident in Dominic McLaughlin, the young actor cast as the new Harry Potter, Daniel remarked,

I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me.

Meet the New Faces of Hogwarts

Alongside Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, several young actors will embody familiar Hogwarts characters in the forthcoming HBO series. Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout will take on the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, respectively, completing the iconic trio that captivated audiences worldwide.

The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen,

said Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, the executive producers.

We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It’s been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.

Key Cast Announcements and Role Replacements

The adaptation also brings in fresh faces for many beloved characters from the original films, replacing the legendary actors who originally brought them to life.

Anton Lesser, known for his work in Game of Thrones, has been cast as Garrick Ollivander, the wandmaker, taking over a role famously played by John Hurt, who passed away in 2017.

The role of Neville Longbottom, once played by Matthew Lewis, will be portrayed by young Rory Wilmot, while Louise Brealey, recognized for her performances in Sherlock and A Discovery of Witches, will step into the role of Madam Rolanda Hooch, the Hogwarts Quidditch instructor, previously played by Zoe Wanamaker.

Amos Kitson is set to portray Dudley Dursley, Harry’s cousin, replacing Harry Melling from the original movies. Meanwhile, Lox Pratt will become the new Draco Malfoy. Tom Felton, who originally played Draco, recently announced his move to Broadway with Harry Potter and The Cursed Child.

Ripley actor Johnny Flynn has been confirmed as Lucius Malfoy, the father of Draco. Jason Isaacs, the original Lucius Malfoy, publicly congratulated Flynn, writing,

Thrilled to be passing the keys to Malfoy Manor to @johnnyflynnmusic, a monstrously talented renaissance man.

Katherine Parkinson, a BAFTA-winning actress known for The IT Crowd, will portray Molly Weasley, the matriarch of the Weasley family, replacing Julie Walters.

Comedian Nick Frost, famous for his collaborations with Simon Pegg, is nearing a deal to embody Rubeus Hagrid, the half-giant and Hogwarts gamekeeper, following Robbie Coltrane’s passing in 2022.

Emmy-nominated British actor Paapa Essiedu is in talks to become Professor Severus Snape, a role immortalized by the late Alan Rickman.

John Lithgow brings his seasoned acting prowess as he is set to play Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts. Lithgow acknowledged the weight of the role, saying,

It was not an easy decision,

to Screen Rant in February 2025,

because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited… I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.

Dumbledore was previously portrayed by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

Daniel Rigby, a BAFTA-winner, will assume the role of Vernon Dursley, Harry’s uncle, sharing his excitement on Instagram:

Thrilled to be playing the world’s worst muggle, Uncle Vernon.

The role was once played by Richard Griffiths.

Bel Powley, known for her work in The Morning Show and A Small Light, will portray Aunt Petunia Dursley, following Fiona Shaw’s earlier depiction.

British actress Janet McTeer is set to embody Professor Minerva McGonagall, head of Gryffindor and Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts, originally portrayed by Dame Maggie Smith. McTeer’s formidable career includes roles in shows like Ozark and Jessica Jones.

Comedy star Paul Whitehouse has been cast as Argus Filch, the Hogwarts caretaker, previously played by David Bradley. Whitehouse is known for his extensive work in UK comedy and amusingly appeared as Sir Cadogan in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

A trio of young actors will play Harry’s schoolmates Seamus Finnigan, Parvati Patil, and Lavender Brown: Leo Earley, Alessia Leoni, and Sienna Moosah, respectively. These characters were portrayed by Devon Murray, Shefali Chowdhury, and Jessie Cave in the films.

Bertie Carvel, a Tony Award-winning actor, will take on the role of Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Robert Hardy originally played this character before his death in 2017.

The role of Quirinus Quirrell, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher appearing in the first Harry Potter book, will be played by theater actor Luke Thallon, succeeding Ian Hart.

What the New Series Means for the Harry Potter Legacy

The HBO adaptation represents a bold new chapter for Harry Potter fans, introducing fresh talent while honoring the legacy of the beloved film franchise. The casting choices clearly show a dedication to careful selection and respect for the original characters, aiming to capture the magic that has resonated with audiences for over two decades.

With seasoned veterans like John Lithgow and Janet McTeer joining the cast, combined with promising newcomers like Dominic McLaughlin and Arabella Stanton, the series promises both familiarity and innovation. The thoughtful casting and producer enthusiasm suggest this adaptation will reignite Harry Potter’s cultural influence, balancing nostalgic reverence with new storytelling energy as the franchise moves forward.
