Cillian Murphy Shines at Star-Studded Peaky Blinders Premiere

Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy led a gathering of stars at the world premiere of the Peaky Blinders movie in Birmingham, England’s second-largest city, which has long been tied to the TV series. The event marked the debut of the highly anticipated spin-off film, drawing widespread excitement from both locals and enthusiasts of the hit show.

Murphy appeared alongside notable actors Tim Roth and Rebecca Ferguson, members of the band Fontaines D.C., and several Premier League footballers for the grand unveiling held yesterday. The film, titled Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, continues the story of the Shelby family and is set to reach cinemas soon, followed by a Netflix release in March.

Why Birmingham Remains Central to the Peaky Blinders Story

Murphy highlighted the significance of Birmingham, often affectionately called Brum, in shaping the series’ identity. He emphasized that the city itself serves almost as a character within both the six seasons of the original BBC show and this new film adaptation.

“The only place it could ever happen,”

Murphy told AFP, expressing the deep connection between the location and the narrative’s authenticity.

The actor also discussed casting Barry Keoghan, who plays Murphy’s on-screen son for the first time in the film. Murphy shared a lighthearted moment from the red carpet, revealing,

“I sent him a text on Father’s Day apparently – I’d forgotten it was Father’s Day! – and asked him did he want to be in it,”

followed by,

“We know each other… he’s just unbelievable on camera.”

Premiere Atmosphere Reflects the Show’s Vintage Style

Hundreds of fans gathered near Birmingham’s canals, many dressed in vintage attire reminiscent of the 1920s and 1930s, the eras portrayed in Peaky Blinders. The premiere featured live music performances by Fontaines D.C., whose soundtrack contributions to the film enhanced the event’s ambiance. Pyrotechnics lit up the cast’s photoshoot area, prominently featuring the iconic Peaky Blinders sign.

Even local landmarks played their part in the celebration. The mechanical bull statue close to Birmingham’s city station was adorned with one of the signature flat caps linked to the show. Both visitors and residents donned these caps, posing with photographers dressed as characters from the series to capture the spirit of Peaky Blinders.

Peaky Blinders: Its Historical Roots and Narrative Progression

The BBC series launched in 2013, reviving global interest in Birmingham and its working-class culture symbolized by the flat-capped street gangs known as the Peaky Blinders. These gangs, active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, were said to conceal razor blades in their headwear, lending the name to the show.

Across six seasons, the story traced the criminal exploits of Thomas Shelby, played by Murphy, in the interwar period. The new film extends this timeline into World War II, depicting Shelby’s return to Birmingham from exile as his son, Duke, spirals out of control.

Series creator Steven Knight explained the choice to set the film during wartime, telling AFP,

“I really wanted it to be set in the war,”

and adding,

“In that time, when the bombs are falling, people become very hedonistic because they don’t know if they’re going to be alive the next day, so almost the Peaky Blinders ethos becomes a general ethos.”

The director, Tom Harper, further noted the appropriateness of revisiting Murphy’s character in a wartime context, given his roots in trauma from the First World War. Harper commented,

“Just having that kind of explosive nature of the Second World War, echoing the explosive nature of the narrative, feels fitting,”

emphasizing the narrative’s intensity.

New Faces and the Potential End of a Saga

The movie introduces new characters, including Roth’s Beckett and Ferguson’s Kaulo, adding fresh dimensions to the established cast. For long-time cast member Packy Lee, who has portrayed Johnny Dogs throughout, the project has been a significant journey. Lee reflected on his experience, saying,

“I’ve enjoyed every minute of it,”

and noted,

“It’s been almost 14 years of my life playing the same character!”

Murphy himself conveyed a sense of incompletion regarding the series’ conclusion. Speaking to AFP, he admitted,

“I think it’ll take a bit of time for me, you know.”

As Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man prepares for its public release in cinemas and on Netflix, it may serve as the closing chapter for this iconic British drama. For Birmingham, the premiere reinforced the city’s vital role in shaping a story that has captivated audiences worldwide, blending history, crime, and deeply crafted characters in a unique cultural phenomenon.
