The upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO offers a fresh take on the world of wizardry for a new generation, including Daniel Radcliffe’s own son. Radcliffe recently spoke about this transition during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 2, expressing his approval of Dominic McLaughlin starring as the lead in the new adaptation.
Radcliffe’s excitement is tied closely to his role as a father. He shared that he is pleased his child will experience the magic of Harry Potter through a different actor, rather than himself.
Passing the Torch: New Faces Bring New Energy
The tradition of iconic characters being portrayed by multiple actors over time is familiar in Hollywood. Radcliffe cited the example of Spider-Man, a role played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland in separate film series during his lifetime. This perspective helps him embrace the new Harry Potter series.
He told Colbert,
“There will always be many, many iterations,”
adding,
“So I’m very happy to see it passed onto somebody else, and best of luck to all of them.”
From Child Star to Devoted Father
Radcliffe made his debut as Harry Potter in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, beginning a film franchise that spans eight movies based on J.K. Rowling’s novels. “For as long as I can just be his dad, and he won’t know me as anything else, I will maintain that for as long as I can.”
