Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers Hits Netflix After 34 Years

Stephen King‘s Sleepwalkers, a divisive horror film that has gained cult status over the decades, is now available for streaming on Netflix as of March 1. This arrival marks the film’s first major streaming presence, introducing a new generation of horror fans to its chilling story.

The movie was directed by Mick Garris, with a screenplay written by Stephen King himself. It centers on Mary and Charles Brady, a mother and son who belong to a rare breed of shapeshifting, catlike vampires. Their survival depends on draining the life force of female virgins, driving them to roam from town to town in search of victims. The Brady duo’s unsettling presence unsettles the small town of Travis, Indiana, where they infiltrate the community’s daily life, with notable performances including an uncredited Mark Hamill and Mädchen Amick starring as Tanya Robertson, who becomes intimately involved in the dark events unfolding around them.

Upon its 1992 release, Sleepwalkers achieved moderate commercial success, earning over $30.5 million at the box office against a $15 million budget. Despite this, the film met with harsh critical reception, holding only a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 32% audience score on Popcornmeter, reflecting widespread critical and viewer disapproval at the time.

Stephen King’s Present-Day Project Highlights

While Sleepwalkers did not initially receive widespread acclaim, Stephen King’s adaptations have experienced a resurgence and stronger reception in recent years. Notably, series like The Institute and IT: Welcome to Derry have captured audience attention and are either continuing or anticipated to proceed with additional seasons on prominent streaming platforms.

The Institute, which debuted on MGM+ last year, follows Luke Ellis, a boy with psychic abilities held captive in a facility run by the menacing Ms. Sigsby, played by Mary-Louise Parker. The series also features Ben Barnes portraying Tim Jamieson, a former cop committed to rescuing the children trapped in the Institute’s control.

Expanding the It Franchise with New Installments

IT: Welcome to Derry also premiered last year and serves as a prequel to the popular It films. Set in 1962 Derry, Maine, the storyline details Pennywise’s horrific murder spree. While HBO has not officially renewed the show for a second season, producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti have expressed interest in continuing to explore more of the franchise’s mythology in future episodes.

Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers is now officially part of Netflix’s catalog, allowing fans and newcomers to access the film on one of the world’s largest streaming services.

Essential Cast of Sleepwalkers

The film stars Brian Krause and Mädchen Amick in leading roles, with Krause portraying Charles Brady and Amick as Tanya Robertson, who becomes deeply entangled in the sinister happenings in Travis. Their performances anchor the film’s eerie and tense atmosphere, contributing to its lasting cult appeal despite initial mixed reactions.
