Maggie Gyllenhaal Hails Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale in The Bride

During a recent event in Coron, Palawan, filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal expressed strong admiration for Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, who star as the leads in her second feature film, The Bride! The project draws inspiration from the 1935 classic monster movie The Bride of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley’s iconic novel Frankenstein.

In The Bride!, Christian Bale plays Frankenstein’s monster, who approaches Dr. Euphronius, portrayed by Annette Bening, to help create a companion for him. Together, they bring back to life a murdered woman named Ida, played by Buckley, who becomes the story’s titular character. Gyllenhaal, who also wrote and co-produced the film, describes the story as a fresh interpretation of the Bride myth, driven by her fascination with monstrousness.

“I’m interested in the monstrousness I see outside of myself that I think is really kind of alive and everywhere right now,”

Gyllenhaal said.

“I’m also interested in the monstrousness I see inside myself.”

The Unique Bond Between Gyllenhaal and Buckley

Jessie Buckley previously worked with Maggie Gyllenhaal on her directing debut, The Lost Daughter, which brought both women their first Oscar nominations—Buckley for Best Supporting Actress and Gyllenhaal for Best Adapted Screenplay. Gyllenhaal praised Buckley’s performance in that film, highlighting their deep creative connection.

“One of my favorite things about being a director is figuring out what language you have to speak to each actor in. With Jessie, I just talked to her like I talked to myself. It was completely pure.”

Initially hesitant to write the role of the Bride for Buckley due to perceived limitations, Gyllenhaal ultimately recognized that no one else could embody the character as perfectly as Buckley, the star of Hamnet.

Gyllenhaal emphasized Buckley’s exceptional understanding of human emotion, saying,

“I think it’s to do with her wisdom in knowing that every human being holds the whole spectrum of feelings, so fierce and powerful, and right next to that is the deepest vulnerability. Also smart, totally irrational, sexy, and also sometimes ugly. All of it, put together, makes a person.”

She added that Buckley’s extraordinary qualities deepen her ability to refine her acting craft, making her stand out as a remarkable talent.

Christian Bale’s Tough and Vulnerable Portrayal

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s collaboration with Christian Bale on The Bride! marks their first time working together as director and actor, though Bale previously appeared in Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed The Dark Knight. Gyllenhaal spoke about the genuine and intense connection shared by Bale and Buckley on set, something she described as rare and unpredictable.

Discussing Bale’s approach to playing Frankenstein’s monster—named Frank in the film—Gyllenhaal explained,

“Part of the skill of being a brilliant actor is being able to walk up to someone and hand them your heart.”

Drawing heavily from Mary Shelley’s original novel, she portrayed the monster as

“vulnerable, full of need and hunger, yet so smart.”

Gyllenhaal elaborated,

“The monster in the book just hangs out in a barn and listens to people and learns French. That’s hard to do. I needed somebody with all of those characteristics who was also tough.”

Despite acknowledging the monster’s violent actions, Gyllenhaal noted that similar impulses can be found within ordinary people.

“I needed someone who could hold all of that and be able to hold the monstrous in a way that lets us look at it and go, ‘Yeah, I don’t bash people’s heads in personally, but there are parts of me that have that kind of rage,’”

she stated.

Release and Anticipation in the Philippines

The Bride! is set to premiere in cinemas across the Philippines on March 4, inviting audiences to experience this nuanced retelling of a classic horror tale. With Gyllenhaal’s direction bringing fresh perspective, combined with standout performances from Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, the film aims to explore the complexities of humanity through the lens of monstrousness.

The project also highlights Gyllenhaal’s growing influence as an actress-director following her success with The Lost Daughter, setting expectations high for her evolving career and the potential impact of this film on horror and character-driven storytelling.
