Daniel Neeson, son of actor Liam Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson, has shared details about his recent surgery to correct a rare congenital heart condition. In an Instagram post on March 3, Daniel discussed living with a bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), a condition affecting approximately 2% of the population, and the journey leading to his medical intervention.
Understanding the Congenital Heart Condition and Its Impact
Daniel Neeson explained that he was born with a bicuspid aortic valve, a heart defect where the aortic valve has two leaflets instead of the usual three. This anomaly can remain unnoticed for years but may eventually cause valve failure or enlargement of the aorta. He described how he underwent regular cardiology checkups throughout his life to monitor the condition.
As Daniel’s heart condition progressed, he faced severe left ventricle dilation and an enlarged aorta, signaling the need for surgery at a younger age than most patients with BAV.
“For me, I had biannual cardiology checkups for most of my life, monitoring my heart,”
he wrote.
“Eventually, I started to experience severe left ventricle dilation and aortic enlargement. I knew it was heading toward medical intervention. Some people with BAV are operated on later in life, but I drew the early bird straw.”
Medical sources such as the Mayo Clinic highlight that bicuspid aortic valve can cause narrowing of the valve, backward blood flow, and aortic enlargement, all of which Daniel experienced firsthand.
Daniel’s Reflections on Facing His Health Challenge
Sharing his emotional journey, Daniel emphasized the importance of being proactive about health.
“Nothing is more empowering than understanding your health, staying on top of your game, and planning ahead. Health is about being proactive, not reactive,”
he said.
He described the realization of his condition developing quietly over many years, without dramatic symptoms but with significant effect.

“There’s something surreal about realizing that one of your biggest challenges was quietly developing inside you your entire life. No dramatic warning. Just science, genetics, and timing.”
Unlike previous challenges where he felt in control, Daniel recognized that this health issue required acceptance and trust in medical professionals.
“I’ve always prided myself on pushing through battles and working to control my environment,”
he wrote.
“This was different. … This required surrender. Presence. Letting go. Trusting world-class surgeons and unbelievable nurses. Trusting the universe. Trusting that even if I couldn’t control the outcome, I could control my mindset and my deeper consciousness.”
An Operation Seen as a Ceremony and a Path to Healing
Daniel described his surgery not as a mere medical procedure but as a significant, almost spiritual experience.
“Overcoming this wasn’t about being fearless. It was about leaning into the healing energy and being as present as possible. I looked at this operation as a ceremony, not a procedure,”
he said, expressing deep gratitude to the medical team for their exceptional care.
He shared insights about recovery, encouraging others to be mindful of their health and advocate for themselves.
“The recovery trail is beautiful, patient, and rewarding. Always advocate for yourself and listen to your body. Everyone should have their hearts checked by a cardiologist, even if they don’t have any known defects,”
Daniel advised.
Concluding his message, he offered words of reassurance and hope.
“Most importantly, surrender to the present moment. Don’t live in fear. The universe has your back when you learn to dance with it.”
Support from Family and Loved Ones
Daniel also took time to thank those close to him, including his fiancée, Natalie Ackerman, whom he became engaged to in September 2025 after eight years together. Natalie shared her joy on Instagram, posting,
“Such an overwhelming feeling of love!!!!!! I love you, Danny, and I’m so thankful for all our friends and family who made this day so special 🥹 Beyond grateful.”
Liam Neeson, aged 73, has two sons with the late Natasha Richardson: Daniel and his older brother Micheál, 30. Daniel’s openness about his heart surgery sheds light on the importance of awareness and early detection of congenital heart defects, especially within families.
What This Reveals About Heart Health Awareness
Daniel Neeson’s candid discussion of his bicuspid aortic valve and subsequent surgery highlights the significance of regular cardiac monitoring, even when symptoms are absent. His story encourages a proactive approach to health and underscores the invisible challenges some face without warning.
As advances in medical care continue, Daniel’s experience serves as a reminder that genetic conditions require vigilance and trust in medical expertise. His message advocates for empathy, self-advocacy, and mental resilience, which are crucial during serious health journeys.
