In April, a Minecraft Movie will be making its way to movie theaters. Ahead of the release, an early look has been revealed of an action figure based on Jack Black‘s live-action incarnation of Steve. An image was posted on Reddit showcasing Jack Black’s Steve from the upcoming Minecraft Movie. While he wears Steve’s familiar blue shirt, Black’s portrayal puts a unique spin on the character as he transitions into live-action. It is likely that Mattel will also release other action figures and various forms of merchandise for the Minecraft adaptation. For now, filmgoers can see a glimpse of Black’s Minecraft Movie figure in the Reddit post.
Fans have shared their mixed reactions online. “That’s awful. But I also kinda want one,” reads one popular comment on the Reddit post. Another commenter humorously noted, “It’s literally just a Jack Black action figure. I wonder if it can threaten the toy paparazzi with martial arts?” Such sentiments highlight the divide among fans regarding the action figure’s appearance. One user expressed, “I know why this exists. I understand why it exists. But that doesn’t mean that I like that it exists.” Another fan added, “See, this just makes me wish Kyle Gass was in the movie as well so we can have official unofficial Tenacious D figures,” referencing Black’s musical duo with Kyle Gass.
After many years of production delays, the Minecraft Movie is finally set to hit theaters in 2025. Directed by Jared Hess, the film is written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, and it is directly based on the hit video game developed by Mojang Studios, first released in 2011. In the movie, a group of four characters, played by Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen, are transported through a portal into the cubic world of Minecraft. Here, they encounter Jack Black’s Steve, an expert crafter based on a playable character from the original game.
The trailers for the film have generated polarizing opinions, with some fans feeling that the aesthetic of Minecraft does not translate effectively into a live-action format. Regardless of these mixed reactions, the brand’s immense popularity among gamers suggests that the Minecraft Movie could potentially achieve significant box office success. “An actor prepares, so, I have literally been exclusive to Minecraft for the last month and a half,” Black shared in a previous interview with IGN, discussing his preparation for the role of Steve. “All Minecraft, all the time. I’m in a little movie called Minecraft—I don’t want to brag, but it’s kind of a big deal. Just Stevin’ it up in the Minecraft universe. Getting back into it, because I did play years ago, because my kids were super-duper into it, and I wanted to speak their language. So, I studied hard, and I learned, and I was getting really into it, building houses and tunneling around. And now I’m getting back into it. It’s pretty rad.”
The excitement surrounding Black’s portrayal and the accompanying merchandise indicates a growing anticipation for the Minecraft Movie, which will be released in theaters on April 4, 2025.
