During an interview, Garfield shared that he was turned down for the role of Prince Caspian in “The Chronicles of Narnia” because casting directors deemed him “not handsome enough.” This revelation sheds light on the challenges actors face beyond talent, particularly in Hollywood’s focus on appearance.
The Missed Opportunity That Shaped His Career
Although he appears youthful, Garfield was born in 1983, making him 42 years old at the time of his statement. British audiences may recall his early work, such as appearing in a 2007 “Doctor Who” episode alongside Daleks, the same year he made his movie debut in Robert Redford‘s “Lions for Lambs.” He was initially cast in Justin Chadwick’s “The Other Boleyn Girl” but had his scenes removed. Around this period, Garfield was eager to land a role that he believed would define his career trajectory.
Reflecting on this, Garfield said,
“I remember I was so desperate, I auditioned for Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia, and I thought, ‘This could be it, this could be it’,”
he said,
“And that handsome, brilliant actor Ben Barnes ended up getting the role. I think it was down to me and him, and I remember I was obsessed.”
The film, released in 2008, served as the second installment in Walden Media’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s beloved children’s books, continuing the story of the Pevensie siblings.

“She eventually just broke under my incessant nagging, She was like, ‘It’s because they don’t think you’re handsome enough, Andrew’.”
