Colleen Hoover Separates ‘It Ends With Us’ From Blake Lively Legal Drama

Colleen Hoover, the author of It Ends With Us, is taking a new approach toward her novel’s recent film adaptation amid a high-profile legal dispute involving Blake Lively. The drama emerged after Lively, who stars in the 2024 movie alongside director and co-star Justin Baldoni, filed a lawsuit against Baldoni in December 2024, accusing him of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.

Hoover appeared on Jenna Bush Hager’s podcast, Open Book, while promoting her latest film, Reminders of Him, when the conversation shifted to the controversial lawsuit between the two actors. This legal case has since escalated, with Baldoni denying the allegations and responding with a defamation suit against the New York Times for publishing details of Lively’s complaint.

Hoover Reflects on the Impact of the Legal Battle

The lawsuit’s timing and subject matter have posed challenges for Hoover, given the personal themes of the film’s story. On the Open Book podcast, Hoover acknowledged the difficulty but noted that she is gradually able to separate the success of the film from the ongoing court drama.

“It is, but it’s getting easier to separate it because I do look at the success of it,”

Hoover said.

“Opening weekend, we just were all so shocked at how much readers showed up for it and how well it did and how much it resonated. I am so proud of that movie. I think the actors, the director, everyone did such a good job making it that I have to look at everything else separate from the film, from the book.”

She described the situation as unfortunate but expressed gratitude that the story reached audiences through the film.

“Very much grateful that we got to see it come to life.”

Author’s Struggle with Public Perception Amid the Lawsuit

In a November interview with Elle magazine, Hoover shared how the lawsuit has overshadowed her work, causing personal discomfort when discussing her authorship of the story.

“I feel like [the lawsuit] has overshadowed it. I’m almost embarrassed to say I wrote it. When people ask what I do, I’m just like, ‘I’m a writer. Please don’t ask me what I wrote.’”

Legal Proceedings and What Lies Ahead

The dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni is scheduled to go to trial on May 18, with the entertainment industry and fans closely watching the developments. The case highlights the complexities that arise when real-life conflicts involve high-profile films centered on sensitive issues, challenging how audiences and creators navigate the separation between art and ongoing disputes.
