At just 14 years old, Demi Moore was invited to watch a taping of the popular television show “Happy Days,” an experience that thrilled the young actress at the time. During the panel, she described her nervous excitement and the meaningful connection she made with Garry Marshall, who spoke words that resonated profoundly with her.

“I remember I was 14 and I was living here in California and I was invited to go see a taping of the TV show Happy Days. And I was so excited to be there,”

Moore shared with Sara Foster on March 3.

“The creator of that show was a man named Garry Marshall and I don’t know what I was doing or what I was saying — and I did talk to him about this many years later — but he turned to me, and he said, ‘If you could bottle that energy, you could do something with it,’”

she recalled.

Though she was young at the time, Moore fully grasped the significance of his message and how it helped her direct her energy into her craft.

“That moment, he infused in me a level of, I don’t want to say confidence, but a specificity of direction that I needed so desperately; it was able to take something and contain it and direct it towards what I ended up doing for my career,”

Moore explained.

Revisiting the Conversation Years Later

Decades after their first meeting, Moore found herself face-to-face with Garry Marshall once again. She took the opportunity to express how much his advice had influenced her life, only to learn that he did not recall the exchange. Despite this, she emphasized the greater message about the impact any encouragement can have on another person.

“I said to him many years later, ‘You said this thing to me and it completely changed my life,’”

Moore remembered.

“And he in fact didn’t remember the conversation at all, but it’s irrelevant because what is important that I took away from that is also knowing that we never know the seed we might plant for somebody else,”

she added.

“Don’t ever underestimate the impact you might have by giving of yourself to someone else.”
