James Gunn Teases Unlikely Guardians of the Galaxy 4

Despite being the creative force behind the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, James Gunn’s continued involvement in the franchise remains uncertain amid shifting corporate landscapes involving Warner Bros., Netflix, Paramount, and Disney. While DC Studios extended Gunn’s contract, speculation persists about whether Marvel Studios might attempt to revive Guardians of the Galaxy 4, with the topic recently discussed by those close to the original films.

Current Status of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 4

At Emerald City Comic-Con, several cast members addressed the possibility of a fourth installment. Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis, clarified,

“We never talked about a Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 4. It was always imagined as a trilogy.”

The comment echoed the widely held view that the series was intended to conclude with the third film.

Sean Gunn, who portrays Kraglin Obfonteri and is James Gunn’s brother, added a more cautious perspective, suggesting the decision does not solely rest with him or his sibling:

“In some ways, it’s almost like a little above my pay grade. It’s like, if they decide to do it, if they decide that they can put the pieces together and get the right cast, and get a script that they really like and that works, then it would depend on who wrote that script and who was putting it together. And by that point there would probably already be somebody who was part of it, so I don’t know.”

This leaves a faint possibility open, though there are no clear plans underway within Marvel or Disney.

Michael Rooker, who portrayed Yondu Udonta, also weighed in; although Yondu’s character died in the second film and received a ceremonial farewell from Sylvester Stallone’s character Starhawk, the flexible nature of Marvel’s multiverse means nothing can be ruled out entirely.

Concerns Over Extending the Franchise Beyond Its Peak

Rooker expressed reservations about continuing the Guardians series beyond its natural conclusion, urging the franchise to rest on its successes. He said,

“The third one was incredible, but also heartbreaking because we knew it would be the last one, so it’s really special that way.”

Reflecting on the enjoyment of the recent Christmas special, he added,

“The Christmas special was so fun to shoot, so I just loved it so much.”

He also cautioned against overextending the series merely for financial gain, drawing a parallel to a well-known television franchise that prolonged its run extensively:

“Thank goodness it didn’t go on further. … It would become like The Walking Dead. … Please, enough already.”

Future of the Guardians in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Currently, Disney and Marvel Studios are concentrating efforts on upcoming phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Phase Six and Phase Seven projects such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday. While a fourth Guardians film seems improbable without James Gunn’s return, Pom Klementieff noted the possibility of the Guardians characters appearing elsewhere:

“could still appear in another movie as well”

, potentially as part of

“maybe like a big universe-bending crossover.”

This suggests that while a dedicated sequel may not be in development, the Guardians of the Galaxy could make cameo appearances or play roles in larger MCU events. Their presence in future films would maintain the characters’ relevance and tie into broader Marvel narratives without continuing the trilogy’s storyline directly.

The entire Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy remains available for streaming on Disney+, keeping the legacy of the original films accessible to fans and new viewers alike.

Main Cast and Characters

Key Guardians of the Galaxy cast members include Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, the charismatic leader of the team, and Zoe Saldana as Gamora, a warrior with a complex past. Their performances helped anchor the trilogy’s success and maintain audience engagement across multiple films.
