Extraction 3 Filming Finally Starts in Australia in 2026

The highly anticipated third installment of the Extraction series, starring Chris Hemsworth, will commence filming in June 2026 in Australia. After a period of silence since its announcement at TUDUM 2023, the production is now confirmed to start principal photography in Sydney and is expected to continue through October 9, 2026. The decision to film in Australia marks a notable shift for the series, with additional European locations anticipated during the summer months.

New Filming Locations Mark a Return Home for the Lead Actor

The franchise’s earlier movies were shot across India, Thailand, and parts of Europe, but Extraction 3 is set to film predominantly in Sydney, offering a fresh backdrop for the action. This move represents a homecoming for Chris Hemsworth and the production team, who had hoped to film the second movie in Australia but had to relocate due to pandemic-related restrictions. The diverse landscapes of Australia are expected to provide a new visual style, departing from the tropical and snowy settings of the previous entries.

Creative Team Behind the Third Extraction Movie

The familiar team responsible for the first two films is returning to bring Extraction 3 to life. Director Sam Hargrave, who gained acclaim transitioning from stunt coordinator to action director, is helming the project once again. The production is backed by the Russo Brothers’ AGBO, with Joe Russo attached to write the screenplay. Key production roles include Fraser Taggart as cinematographer and Sarah Finn overseeing casting, both known for their prior impressive work in action cinema.

Expansion of the Extraction Franchise Beyond the Trilogy

Netflix and the Russo Brothers have ambitious plans to grow the Extraction universe beyond the upcoming film. Following strong audience reception for Extraction 2, the creators aim to explore new narratives within this world. Joe Russo has indicated an intention to

that move beyond Tyler Rake’s direct arc.

Upcoming Projects Within the Extraction Universe

Two spin-off projects are underway, expanding the franchise’s reach. First is Mercenary, an eight-episode Netflix series starring Omar Sy as a mercenary involved in a high-stakes hostage rescue in Libya. This series, managed by showrunner Glen Mazzara, began filming in North Africa in late 2025 and is expected to premiere before Extraction 3.

The second project is Tygo, a spin-off film introduced in late 2025. Set in South Korea, it stars Don Lee as the former child soldier turned mercenary on a revenge mission through the Korean underworld. The film is directed by Lee Sang-yong and adds a distinct cultural dimension to the unfolding narrative web.

Projected Release and Anticipation for Extraction 3

Given the projected wrap date for filming in October 2026, the movie is unlikely to appear on Netflix before summer or fall of 2027. The location shift to Australia coupled with the return of the core creative team has generated excitement among fans eager to see a new chapter in Tyler Rake’s story and the expanded Extraction universe.
