Donald Glover has been confirmed as the voice of Yoshi, the green dinosaur, in the upcoming “Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” The announcement came as part of a new cast reveal during a Nintendo Direct livestream on Monday, highlighting more talent joining the animated film’s video game-inspired lineup.
New and Returning Cast Join the Intergalactic Adventure
Alongside Donald Glover as Yoshi, Luis Guzman will voice Wart, and Issa Rae takes on the role of Honey Queen. The film brings back Chris Pratt as Mario, continuing his role from the 2023 “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” now with Mario venturing into space. Other returning voices include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.
The sequel also introduces fresh characters voiced by Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Brie Larson as Princess Rosalina—a character originally from the 2007 video game “Super Mario Galaxy.” This ensemble reflects a robust mix of familiar and new faces joining the Mushroom Kingdom heroes.
Plot Overview: A Space Journey Filled With Challenges
The story picks up after Mario, Luigi, and Peach’s victory over Bowser in the previous film. This time, they face not only Bowser and his son but also explore diverse planets beyond their world. The adventure includes fiery volcano worlds, underwater planets, and a futuristic techno-land featuring neon lighting and gravity-defying obstacles. Mario and his friends team up with Rosalina and Yoshi as they navigate these new challenges in outer space.
Production Details and Release Date
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. Produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo, the film is set to premiere in theaters on April 1. Illumination CEO and producer Chris Meledandri revealed these details during the livestream, also unveiling the movie’s latest trailer.
The movie’s ambitious blend of well-known characters, vibrant settings, and a storyline expanding beyond the Mushroom Kingdom suggests it will appeal to fans both old and new, bringing the beloved game universe closer to cinematic life once again.
