Morgan Freeman, the acclaimed Oscar-winning actor, is set to present the Morgan Freeman Symphonic Blues Experience in Jackson, Mississippi, this March. The event features the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and will take place at Thalia Mara Hall, blending blues music with symphonic arrangements to celebrate the genre’s roots.
Freeman, originally from Mississippi, co-owns the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale and has toured the Symphonic Blues Experience internationally with his business partner Eric Meier. This performance marks a special return of the blues back to its birthplace.
A Tribute to Mississippi’s Blues Heritage
Freeman emphasized the importance of presenting the blues in Mississippi, where the genre was born and developed. Reflecting on the music’s journey, he said,
“Georgia, Illinois, Kansas City, California, even Austria and Ireland. So it belongs in Mississippi. It came from Mississippi, was originated in Mississippi,”
Morgan Freeman stated.
His own connection to Mississippi is personal and profound. After spending extended time away during his early career, Freeman returned to visit his parents, who had settled in Charleston, Mississippi. He shared,
“I was coming back to visit them, and every time I came back home, I had this, this feeling, this relaxation, this place that you wanted to be. It was comfortable, so I moved back,”
Freeman explained.
Exploring Blues History Through Music and Storytelling
Eric Meier described the Symphonic Blues Experience as a musical voyage across more than 100 years of blues history. The show traces the genre’s origins from the Mississippi Delta in the 1930s to modern-day blues, incorporating elements of gospel and rock ‘n’ roll along the way.
“Really, Blues music of the last hundred years. I mean, this music had its humble birth in the Mississippi Delta and then spread globally. And so we basically trace the origins of this music, starting in the 1930s and then it really finishes up with modern-day blues hits,”
Meier remarked.

The performance features narration by Morgan Freeman, who brings his iconic storytelling skills to provide cultural and historical insights throughout the show. According to Meier,
“Morgan does a phenomenal job, really providing narration to provide context of what this is all about during this time period. I mean, how can you get better than the world’s greatest storyteller?”
Tickets in High Demand for March Performance
Tickets for the Symphonic Blues Experience are selling rapidly. Meier emphasized the show’s unique blend of education and entertainment, promising audiences a memorable experience that is both enlightening and engaging.
“It’s a blend of entertainment and education. I promise you’re gonna learn something about this, hopefully you’ll get up and dance, and you’ll know many of these songs. It’s just, it’s a great show,”
Meier said.
The event is scheduled for March 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson. Fans of blues and symphonic music alike are encouraged to secure tickets early to witness this celebration of Mississippi’s rich musical legacy.
